What color lenses do you prefer for your sunglasses?

I usually prefer an amber color. I like the increased clarity without darkening the sight too much. I'll wear them into the late afternoon even, and I think they're still very good in overcast conditions. But I do find sometimes they can be a bit insufficient in very bright conditions.

I guess the obvious answer is to get both a light and dark pair, but the ones I'm looking at are kind of expensive, so that's not happening.

I love the older amber gradient lenses made by Vuarnet. I know, very 80's, but I still think they're the best sunglasses I'll ever have.

I've found that once the eyes adjust, there is no advantage to "contrast enhancing" tints. I like a 20-25% light transmission lens with a reflective coating - Oakley's Shallow Blue, Slate, and G30 Titanium all work.

It can get freaking bright here. I prefer to get them as dark gray as possible.

Darkest gray mirror, polarized. I have a $6 pair of S&W amber ones I use at night on the freeway.

Oakley Black Iridium Polarized. 9% transmission. Or Amber BIP. 18% transmission.

Which pair will you wear the least? Buy what'll get you by, and spend the $$ on the pair you'll wear more often.

I'm actually thinking about one of the Maui Jims with the titanium flex frames. I've tried them on a couple times now at a store, and I really like the way they fit.

I have a bit of a narrow face I guess, because a whole lot of sunglasses leave a big gap between the lens and my face on the side. These look kind of classy but they wrap around my face better like sport sunglasses. They're also very light and seem very comfortable.

Here's one of the two pair I was thinking about getting. If I get this pair though, I'll go with the gray lenses.

I picked up a pair of Oakley Flak Jackets, and three different sets of lenses.

Black iridium polarized for sunny days, and G30 for overcast days.

Nanowire 2.0. All the Nanowire series are for large heads and would not fit you.

I've used yellow/amber safety glasses and while the contrast is nice, it turns everything very yellow to the point I can't tell the colors (safety concern).

Oakley's VR28 is the best of both worlds, but it still has trouble fighting off glare. I keep two M-Frames with me: VR28 and Black Iridium. The Black Iridium is one of Oakley's darkest tints but I can still use it in a dimly lit workshop in a pinch, while it fights off glare and bright sunlight very easily.

The VR28 works for overcast and some sun (typical North/Midwest winter) and gives you excellent contrast without interfering with colors. The VR28 actually makes yellows, reds, and oranges extremely bright which helps with safety (driving, working on machines, etc...)

I like the green lenses aviators, other than that I dont really care as long as it matches my belt and shoes.

Some of those Serengeti's look nice.

I have Oakley's in Half Jacket and M Frame, they both have a hard case array of lenses that I use, the lens colors are dark polarized, amber and clear.

Lens type depends on the activity, time of day and weather conditions.

It feels like I get a little bit better color rendition and detail with brown polarized sunglasses. I've got a pair of Natives with brown and a pair with copper (brown base), and I'm very happy with 'em.

I have light blue eyes and tend to be more sensitive to bright light than most so I tend to wear sunglasses outside from dawn 'till dusk, and those are all I ever use.

They look good, but I've had both lenses start to de-laminate and one lens that pops out of the frame all the time.

I like neutral grey tints the best, but amber is ok when it's really overcast.

ETA: With less than 15% transmission. My blue eyes are sensitive.

How expensive are the ones you are looking at each?

ETA, after seeing the Maui Jims you're thinking about, check out some of the Julbo sunglasses. Got some photochromatics for cheaper than that, impact resistant, and have a lifetime warranty.

Depends on the purpose, weather, and sunlight conditions.

You can't go wrong with anything Serengeti produces. Super clear, distortion-free glass, AR coated, photochromic, spectrum tweaked for maximum contrast.
Wiley X - photochromic brown for skiing in variable light conditions. Much broader tint range (10-80%) than Serengetis to permit use in flat light conditions.
For trap & skeet, vermillion lenses. Makes the clays really stand out. For general purpose outdoor shooting, pale yellow.

Black iridium - I want under 20% light transmission. That being said, I found that amber lenses make me perceive a cloudy day as if it were sunny outside (which I find kind of cool).
