OK, I usually buy premium optics, but premium night vision gear is insanely expensive.  I would love to find a cheap, 1x night vision optic to put behind an Aimpoint for some night hunting and for the tactical advantage one would provide in complete darkness.

So tonight I was messing around with my cheap digital camera when I noticed a night shot switch on the side.  The camera has a tiny, built in infra-red LED for taking night photos.  So I took a self portrait in complete darkness:

No, I don't know why I have that look on my face, but it does prove the concept.  Rather then using expensive gen 1-3 style tubes, why doesn't someone make a cheap, digital 1x night vision optic that would use an infra-red flashlight?

I'm going to borrow my friends IR flashlight tomorrow and take some outdoor night shots because the one on the camera is too anemic for outdoors.

If a digital NV optic was on the market for <$100 would you buy it?

CCD/CMOS sensors are sensitive to IR, most manuactures include a IR filter in the optical path to remove it.  That is the difference between the "nightshot" modes and regular modes on cameras.  Most are easy to remove.

Who makes cameras with night shot these days?  I thought Sony quit a few years ago.  Been looking for one.

It's a Sony.  Once I cover up the IR LED on the camera, mount it behind my Aimpoint, and use a larger IR flashlight to "light up" my backyard, I think the pics will look pretty good.  A rifle optic version could be quite compact because it wouldn't need any zoom, a large LCD screen, the ability to take photos, or any other features that would take up space.

There are IR camera toys labeled as night vision. They seem to work pretty well for what they are.

you mean like ATN gen 1?  those run about $150.

you can get into gen 2 for about $700.  google 'patriot pocketscope'.  it's one tube of a pvs5 repackaged into a monocular.  i've used mine a ton, and have no complaints.

OK, that's funny - my wife LOL'ed.

Thanks for the links to cheap night vision products - still haven't found as small digital version for mounting behind a dot sight.
