It was so bad, our Btn CO put out an order that anyone in the Btn attempting to sell Pre-paid legal, to anyone, would be brought up on charges. |

There is such a thing as prepaid legal. But that doesn't mean this one is legit. Edited to add that the local GM workers used to have prepaid legal as a benefits option, IIRC. It operated like health insurance. If you had a legal need, they had a list of service providers where the worker could go get assistance for no or reduced out-of-pocket costs. Not sure how it worked from the attorney's end though. May have just been a referral generator where volume would pay for the discount in services. |

One of my worst (recently) was an old friend from HS. I appreciated the phone call. I am old now and remember our good times with fondness, so I thought it was a cool call. Then he gets soapy... And tells me how much he admired me back then. Well, I was an idiot back then, but, hey, I can take a compliment... Then he tells me that he appreciated my work ethic back then. Yeah, I always worked and saved... But that is when a little bell started ringing in the back of my head... I said, "Hey, I appreciate all the compliments, but are you trying to sell me something..." Hoping that we could get back on track of talking about sports, and stupid stuff we did, and how all the real dicks turned out to be grown-up douchebags... Well, he says... The reason he called was that he has a job "opportunity" for me... Well... Having grown up in Utah, I know the code-word difference between "offer" and "opportunity" Sadly, I have many, many more stories just like that one... Stay away. Stay far away. If you need vitamins... Go get good ones from the vitamin store, or the exact same thing for cheaper from Wal-Mart. If you need legal advice make buddies with a lawyer. If you need a "super food" (that was a line from someone trying to sell me a snakeoil drink) plant a garden. I said to the bum that any tomato or raspberry fresh from my garden could kick his gay imported berries ass. |

I know some people that signed up for it, just in case. I don't know that they ever did. I remember the guy telling me I should sign up, wanted to give me the whole BS line. He was none too happy I told him it was a scam, and to leave me alone.

I haven't had it happen in awhile. But I used to get a cold call from prepaid legal type places every once in awhile. All they would ask was if I would agree to represent someone who had their plan and usually the only stipulation was that I would charge some lowball fee for an initial consultation, sometimes they would ask that I charge no more than a set amount per hour. They never asked about my experience in that kind of thing beyond asking "do you divorces/dwi/whatever"? I usually just said I wasn't interested. I did agree to take a case once, mostly because I was curious about it from posts about it here. They asked if I would represent a woman in a pretty routine legal matter. I think they wanted me to agree to a set fee for an initial consultation but I don't think there was any discussion about the fee. These people didn't know me from Adam, except maybe for whatever research they were able to do on me online, but I think they were just going through a phone book or some listing they got where they knew my areas of practice. The woman (the potential client) called me the next day and told me she lived in a town in the next county, about an hour drive away. I told her I would end up charging her more for the travel time to go to court with her in that county as it would end up costing me a half a day by the time I drove up and back and did the court appearance. I suggested she just hire an attorney closer to where she lived and gave her the names of a couple of guys I knew up there who would take care of it. My other prepaid horror story was I agreed to do a closing for a girlfriend of a buddy. The people selling the house to the girl had some prepaid legal attorney, I think maybe the closing was free or cheap because of that. The guy was terrible. He just never got around to doing simple stuff like drawing up the new deed, which since it was a relatively new home a monkey could have done. Both the girl and the people selling her the house were immigrants and spoke the same language, so the sellers liked her and finally told her they didn't know what to do as their lawyer didn't seem to do anything and never returned their calls. She said they were very nice and very distraught so I just did the paperwork their lawyer was supposed to do for free. This was also in another county so I had never met the seller attorney before or after that so I don't know if he was just having personal problems or if he was just a screwball. I remember he didn't even thank me or anything for doing all his work. I do have buddies who do sort of prepaid legal for a large union, they agree to do wills, tickets, real estate closing cheap and get some other, better paying business out of the people (hopefully) and they send out the stuff they aren't comfortable with, like IRS stuff. So not all of them are bad, but I think it's a poor use of anyone's money.
