They are sweet rifles for the money.  Sorry, I am not going to talk you out of one.

$89

Another $89 for a spam can of surplus ammo.

BOOM= 4ft fireball.

What the Hell is THAT thing?

(All I got.)

Buy one.

That's mine right when I got it. I know the bayonet isn't fixed correctly.

It's cool either way.

They're not as big a blast as an M44 carbine but they're still a blast to shoot. And cheaply too.

Nothing quite like shooting a rifle 4 foot long. Or a 6' long spear when the bayonet is attached.

Don't do it!!!

Once you buy one you will be overcome with the urge to buy more. It's worse than BRD.

I've kinda wanted to make a tanker Mosin one of these days by cutting one down to 16", but trying to keep it proportional looking.  A 20" M44 is bad, so I'd think a 16" would just be obscene.

If you get the 91-30 then you have to get the M38 and the M44, just saying. Then you will need a K98 to compliment the "other" side, and then an M1, which will lead to the Enfields......
Love my 91-30. Mine is the hex receiver which I guess doens't mean as much as I thought it did, but what ever, total tack driver for the money and hold Minute of Man at 300 all day long open sites.

More for me.

A FUNCTIONAL piece of history for under $100?
An effective "pass me" rifle, roughly equivalent to .30-06, for arming the "troops" if need be?

Whats not to love?

The K98 I have was a bring back from WWII courtesy of my grandfather who took it off the German who unsucessfully tried to bayonet him. I got an M1 a couple few years ago when the Greek returns first showed up at CMP.
I have an Arisaka from the other theater as well. Figured it might be time to jump on the Soviet band wagon.

There's just something about my Mosin that makes it much more fun than shooting anything else I've got. I can't really explain it.

Shot my "new" M44 for the first time today. The range was crowded when I got there, and I got the last bench on the rifle side. Five rounds later, I had a empty spot on my left and two on my right.

Also just got 880 rounds of the aforementioned Russian surplus on Thursday from AIM.

This is the problem.

I only have a K31 and a 91/30 so far for surplus rifles (have a few pistols, though).

My CMP paperwork is all filled out, though, so I think I might go to the bank and get it notarized sometime this week.

I do "need" an M38 and M44, though.  And a SKS, and an 03A3, and a SMLE, and a K98, and an M1 carbine, and...

Yep, just got one of those myself. Just holding it you can feel the history.

Mine was made by New England Westinghouse in the United States. Date stamped 1915, Hex receiver.

Sent to the Russians, probably carried into Combat in WW1. Captured by the Finnish in the continuation war, re-arsenaled and issued to Finnish troops to fight the Russians.

When I took the butt plate off a flattened piece of wheat fell out. I held it in my hand and wondered what battlefield that came off of and what happened to the Soldier who was carrying it that day.

Maybe I'm just a history geek, but shit like that gets my blood pumping.

Almost all have frosty bores.

The action is prone to being "sticky", some claim it's just cosmo in the chamber but I've seen different reasons and no amount of attaching something to your drill and running it in the chamber will fix it. Of course not all are like this but it is common.

If the gun was more expensive, you prob wouldn't want one. Why buy a gun just cause it's cheap, I don't like to keep guns outside of the safe unless they are part of my "bump in the night plan" and safe space is at a premium.

One of the inaccurate milsurp guns, still minute of man of course but still on the lower end of the cheap guns, cry all you want it's true. No your MN doesn't shoot 1 MOA so shut up. (Please don't bring up the finnish nagant's, just don't do it cause we're talking about regular MN's).

The gun is just mediocre quality, you just want one cause it's cheap and the ammo is cheap. Go for it if you even think you want one though, out of all the cheap guns there are one of the best. Even if you didn't like it you wouldn't be into it much.

It's about the cheapest gun you can buy.  Go for it.  I've got an M38 and and M44 and I haven't shot them as years as they beat the shit out of my shoulder.  But they are lke 80 bucks.

Buy one that someone's already molested then.

OP, C&R is an addiction.  It starts with a cheap mosin.  It ends with you posting on arfcom about how to pay off your credit card bills.

You want downsides?

If you're lucky, it'll come in a thick sticky mess of cosmoline.  Whee.

The mechanism is antiquated and lacking in refinement.  The "safety" sucks.  The trigger sometimes sucks too.  The bolt is un-ergonimic, and manipulation of it is an ugly affair.

My M44 has absolutely untouched raw machine marks all over the bolt.  It looks awful.  It kicks a bit, and the sights are pretty poor.  The attached bayonet is unwieldy and a fair amount of weight on the end of such a small rifle.  Wish I'da got an M38.  The import marks are ugly and prominent.

But they're $90, fairly damn solid, and they can shoot straight enough.

That's the ticket!

You won't be disappointed. It's a gun you can fire until your shoulder says "no more." Seriously, I think the only caliber of ammo that is cheaper than 7.62x54r is .22lr. The Mosins just have a certain charm...
