Aside from everyday stuff(Internet, Word), I play a lot of Arma 2 and FSX.
Intel Core I5 2500K AMD Phenom II 1090T Thanks, AD |

IBTM
In Before the Macs ETA: I'm not sure how the quad-core vs. six-core would differ. Either would be suitable I believe. |

If it were me I would wait for Intel's new processors to come out this year.
Sometime near Spring/Mid-Spring Look up "Sandy Bridge" |
|
I would take a first gen i5 over the AMD, so definetly get the second gen i5
The i5 i7 series is amazing compared to AMD ATM. Plus the i5 has built in graphics so you do not need a GPU |

sandybridge should be out now..
and always go with intel never AMD.. |

Sandy Bridge is the codename for the next gen Core processors from Intel. They are suppose to trump any of the iCore processors. They are PC CPUs |

The Micro Center in Columbus, OH is selling the i5-2500K for $179.99 which is $50.00 less than that Tiger Direct ad. If you have a Micro Center near you, you may want to check them out for your processor.

I have an alienware M11X with an i5 and it laughs off any game I try.

I would go with the Mac Pro dual Quad core Xeons and 32GB ram.

Go with the 2600k.
With the new 2500k and 2600k you have to buy a new motherboard anyways LGA1155. It's $100 more and has more potential, especially if you overclock. As far as the 1090T, it's 6 cores but still not quite as fast as the new Intels. It's mostly useful for imaging and rendering which are designed for more cores. Most games these days are still designed for 4 cores. They rely on quality more than quantity, especially when it comes to FSX. I'm about to get a new rig too and I've got my eye on the 2600k, Asus P8P67 Pro motherboard and some DDR3 1600 RAM. |

I'd lean towards the Intel although you should factor in a good video card for your build

ETA: As I mentioned in my OP, I'm playing some CPU/GPU intensive games. Thats because those types of benchmarks basically add another 500 to 1000 points for every extra core. Those bechmarks suck. If you look at benchmarks that measure the time it takes the CPU to do a certain task or how well it performs in games the intels generally win at the same clock speeds. The i5 will automatically overclock to 3.7Ghz. EDIT: AMD cannot beat intels clock by clock at the sames speeds so they add more cores to make them look more appealing, but in reality no program will use 4 cores let alone 6. |

AMD will give you better value, and better performance on the low budget side. Intel will give you better performance on the high end budget side.

Something to keep in mind regarding the processor wars: If you have a specific application where one clearly outshines the other, then by all means - get that.
If it's within a few percentage points, you could always go ahead and support the underdog. If the underdog goes away, you'll soon enjoy paying $2000+ for a new CPU again. Just sayin... |

Don't forget about SSD. HDD's are the bottleneck these days.
I've decided on this one, Crucial 64GB 355MB/sec (SATA 6Gb/s) Read, 75 Write. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148357 |

I prefer the triple Lucifen Quad 612 giga meg tuggo logtin as a back-up for my Nano Monken DInky Dual bio strato ricktifier Pro management d-cup Fo 556 niner with the GSX I78 passive rectum X=Lunger Bios Metal-Rs 600k, with Topo-graphix webstinky Minion-5t as my primary Ecto-rack and pinion.
But thats just how I roll. |
|
Id go either one in that case. Performance is probably going to be about the same.
Id guess that six cores use more power than four, thats the only real difference if you dont want to get down to the technical stuff. |

I'm thinking about getting an SSD for my boot drive and ARMA 2, then using a RAID 0 with 2 7200 HDDs for all my fsx stuff. |

If we're talking laptops I'd strive to get an icore proc.
Very fast, lots of cache and pretty good on battery consumption vs. similar AMD procs. |

not even a close call, sandy bridge absolutely trounces everything available in terms of performance and value
$300 2600k overclocks to almost 5ghz on air, and comes within 10% or exceeds the benchmark scores of intel's OWN flagship $1000 processors. Amd ain't got nothing on SB, outstanding value on a cpu that destroys anything amd has out, including their 6 core 1090t. So you have to buy a new mobo, big deal, the price/performance justifies it. Just make sure you get a "k" model, those are the ones that can overclock. |

I play Arma 2 daily , get 8 gigs of ram , a good CPU but the key is the video card. spend 350$ on a good nvidia card and you will be fine ,( oh and a SSD hard drive helps)

AMD has fucked me over every time I have "given them a chance".
I'm done with their unstable CPUs and Company. |

AMD will give you better value, and better performance on the low budget side. Intel will give you better performance on the high end budget side. That's not really true anymore. Amd's flagship 1090t is $229, the i5 2500k is about the same price, $220 and it handily trounces the 6 core amd in just about every way possible. for another $100 the 2600k is not even a contest. the value has shifted back to the dark side lol |
|
Whats the bus speed on the Intel?.................go AMD and never look back!!!

Toms Hardware had a great article explaining and testing the Sandy Bridge. If you are into PC gaming, then you might want to consider a different architecture.

ARMA 2 kicks my computers ass..
I wanted to upgrade my memory, but I have no more slots available and only have 2GB! If I upgrade ram, I might as well buy a new mobo and processor as well.. |
