Alcohol-related crashes, for example, injured 30,985 Californians in one year, according to the California Highway Patrol. In 1998, such crashes killed 1,072 people, compared to 702 shooting deaths that year.

Using Perata's logic, we should apply an emergency room tax to each can of beer sold and each shot of whiskey poured.
