I would dig a hole on each side of the side walk, take a peice of 1" steel pipe, cap it, and drive it under the sidewalk with a sledge hammer. This ought to leave a tunnel for the 3/4" to lay in when you remove the caps.

How wide is the side walk? How deep is the footing? What is the dirt like, rocky, soft clay,?
1. Tunnel 2. dig a ditch and use galvanized pipe with a cap and drive it thru. 3. build yourself a water jet using pvc and work it thru. 4. rent a boring machine. Good luck!! Whats it for? |

Like said above, dig a hole on each side, but don’t cap the pipe, drive it under a few feet and pull it back out then run a steel rod, broom stick what ever fits (of course longer than the pipe) through the pipe to knock out the dirt then stick the pipe in the hole and repeat. This is how allot of phone and cable companies do it for short distances. Have even done it under a large driveway, sure beats breaking concrete or way expensive boring machines.
DIESEL Edited to add: and it makes it eaiser to use about a 1.5 inch pipe even though you only needs 3/4" |

Get a sidewalk tunnelling kit from the hardware store, dig a trench on one end and a gole on the other, hook the hose to the kit, and blast away.
It's basically a threaded coupling to let you hook up the hose, and a nozzle for the other end. |

put powder in the pipe, cap both ends, oh you said dig, nevermind

Thanks Guys. When I bought my house (built in 1946) electricity was run to my detached garage overhead using an oak tree for a phone pole. I am now running power directly from breaker box underground like it should have been. My little girl wants a basketball goal put up and the old wires would have been in the way of the goal. Thanks again for the suggestions. Digging trenches and wiring is not nearly as fun as talking about AR's.

Make your own pvc water jet it is the easiest way to do it good luck and have fun in the mud.

In the PVC and sprinkler section of Home Depot they sell tunneling kits which PVC glue onto a 3/4" length of pipe. One end is treaded for the garden hose, the other has a nozzle that's pretty strong.
I cut under under my sidewalk in about five minutes. |

If you have access to a pressure washer, dig a hole on each side of the sidewalk and run the pressure washer nozzel from one hole to the other. I've done this before and had a hole big enough for 3/4" conduit in about 20 seconds. Be prepared to get wet though.

I understand that the Viet Cong and Al Queda are good at tunneling. Perhaps you could hire one of them?

water jet by all means..., i just finished laying a 75 amp, 220V over 200' to my new "hobby shop"...., had to tunnel under 2 footers 20" wide by 30" deep........
as someone said..., enjoy playing in the mud !! |
