This is really pissing me off.  The past few times I have been to the range, my right hand gets really shakey.  The first time it happened was after about 100 rounds of .45 through my aluminum Kimber Compact.  This has gotten worse.  Now I have trouble making it to 100 rounds with my Glock 19.  I used to be able to shoot 500 rounds through my Kimber with no problem at all.

What the hell is wrong with me?  I spend a lot of time on the computer.  Could this be it?  It doesn't hurt, I just can't hold the damn gun without coming off the bull.  I'm lucky if I even get it on the f**king paper when it starts to happen.  In case you can't tell, I'm really upset about this.

Guess my wrists aren't getting the work out they used to (had to say it before someone else did).

Could this have anything to do with loading the magazines?

I noticed something similar when I shot my Makarov a lot, which has pretty stiff magazine springs. I had no idea what caused my wrist to start shaking like that, until I noticed that it only happened right after loading the magazines for it.

I suppose it could...I never thought of that.  Maybe I should shoot just my .45 and see.  Those mags are easy to load.  Or maybe a revolver.  Thanks!

I would have to agree with loading mags,I had a few Tec mags that were new and they were hell to load and it made my wrists all messed up too. If that doesnt work out try buying a wrist/forearm machine ($29) from Walmart or a sports store that helped me out too.

Ofcourse cutting down on the Internet porn may be your best solution[beer]
GoodLuck!

Recently, I started having the same problem shooting Bullseye matches. I also do a lot of computer work. I found that if I did light weight training, holding a ten pound weight out at arms length, similarly to handgun shooting, the problem goes away. YMMV.

Doing the 5 knuckle shuffle more often should clear your problem!!

Been having the same problem of late.  I just write off as 30 years of shooting and 20 years of keyboard/ten key finally coming home to roost.

Haven't found a solution as yet.  Perhaps more lifting of 12 ounce weights will help.

onset of parkinsons or maybe carpal tunnel. Ten years ago I began having problems with my right wrist/hand going to sleep.  Pretty much anytime I would rest my right arm/hand it would go right to sleep. I also was losing a lot of strength in my right hand.  The tingling sensation would even wake me up at night.   The Doc said that when the sensation begins to wake you up at night it is in the latter stages and needs to be corrected. I was bowling anywhere from 50 -100 games a week at the time + working with my hands alot building aircraft and I literally blew my wrist out.  the Doc fixed the problem with a very simple procedure and I have had no trouble now for ten years.

You may also want to set the lightweight compact 45 aside for a while.  Whatever the problem is, that can't be helping it.

Doesn't LT have any advice on wrist strengthening exercises?

It could easily be the onset of carpal tunnel.  You might want to do some research on preventive practices - I've been meaning to do that myself but I've been too busy lately.  Make sure your workstation is set up right.  Keyboard height & distance, chair & arm height/angles, wrist support, etc. can all really help, or hurt if they're not right.

Are you experiencing a burning sensation on the bottom side of your wrist, or numbness in the lower palm of your hand at work?  I know (kinda, again - I haven't had time to research it yet) these can be indicators...

Also - the standard "maybe's" ...nicotine, caffeine, alcohol, diet.  You're taking good care of yourself, right?  Maybe a consultation with your family physician is in order.

Email me & let me know how you're doing.  I'm struggling with the same thing these days.

You be the guinea pig!  [:D]

Wow, a lot of great suggestions.  I feel much better about it now that I know I'm not the only one (not that I'm glad that others suffer this).

Guzzler - I did have to cut down on this activity.  My right arm started to look like Popeye's, while my left looked like Olive Oil's.  I got embarassing.

Malpaso - I was going to try this, but I thought if it was carpal tunnel it might aggravate it.  Maybe I'll give it a shot.

the_reject - That ain't the half of it!!  Got any room down there in Georgia?

Ameshawki - I've been lifting the 12 ounce weights for years to no avail.  I recently switched to the 16 ounce weights...I'll keep you posted on my progress.

satcong - I hadn't even considered accupuncture.  How would you suggest I go about finding someone good?  I'm actually inclined to try this first.  Or should I see a "conventional" physician first?

JFP - No wierd sensations really.  Well, occasionally burning when after I've been chainsawing or weed eating or typing.  But I wouldn't say it's painful...just a little uncomfortable.

a3kid - Most of my troubles (burning) are on the top of my wrist.  I would say from the middle of the top of my hand to about two or three inches into the top of my forearm.  Nothing in the palms, except a little hair.  As far as taking care of myself...I could certainly do better.  I think I will be the Guinea pig...it's really starting to bug me.  I'll let you know what the doc says.

Everyone - Thank you very much for your responses.  I really appreciate it.

sounds like a trapped Ulnar Nerve to me...resting your elbow on a pillow might help some as you keyboard..Ice it down at night..stay off the computer for a few days...If your ring finger and pinky are going numb ..I would be positive its a trapped ulnar nerve..you may need surgery to correct..best get it checked as letting this go can have serious and permanent effects..including paralysis...try ice first see if that helps followed by heat then ice again..
if not please see a real Doc.

Well, I haven't been able to do any shooting or much of anything else for almost a month now because of hip, hand, and shoulder problems.  Dr. says I have bad carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands that require surgery as my hands are almost constantly numb, feel swollen all the time, and in the morning it is difficult to clench a fist or hold anything.  Also learned that I may have a herniated disc again and probably some arthritis.  Shit, I'm only 58 and shouldn't feel this way.  Disc may be on the mend on its own, although I've been eating Ibuprofen like candy for the past month and have to see a neurosurgeon about the carpal tunnel and the disc too since they've done an MRI.  Damn, don't want back surgery again, as it will be the 5th time if I do.  Not really looking forward to the carpal tunnel surgery either, but if it helps, it will be a blessing.

You've got to be kidding me, right?

First of all Chimborazo, excellent topic.  Especially for a place loaded with "keyboard commandos".

9divdoc:  This "trapped ulnar nerve" condition...what causes it?  Is it keyboard/mouse related, or other injury related?   This has just started happening to me over the last few days, while I've been practically living at work (CAD designer) trying to get a major project done.  I've been trying to ignore it - and hoping it will eventually go away when things slow down a little bit here.  (Like maybe 6 ten hour days instead of 7 twelve's...)

Am I seriously messing myself up?

a3kid,

With that much time on the puter, you should definitely have an ergonomic type setup.  Do you?  I'm gonna try a new ergo mouse.

Actually, I don't.  Just a standard height desk, a decent office chair, and one of those mouse pads with wrist support built in.  Due to limited space in my cubicle (cage) and an oversize monitor (21") I can't really get my keyboard & mouse pad forward enough to fully support my arms when I work.  I think that's where a lot of the discomfort comes from.  It never bothered me on standard 45-55 hours a week, but this 80+ crap with no days off to rest is starting to wear on me.

probably would not be allowed in any formal shooting competition, but in lieu of stopping shooting all together I suggest you go to bowling alley and try one of the wrist supports. They do a total lockdown on your wrist not letting it flex or bend. This should transfer all recoil to your upper arm so untill that parts wears out you can keep shooting.
