I have noticed a lot of very very anti smoking persons on here in the last year. What are your thoughts regarding smoking?

Personally, I can understand non-smokers not liking being around smoke. I can understand and don't really mind not smoking when I fly, or having separate smoking areas when I go out to eat. What I don't like is things like certain airports that make you go all the way to the front and outside to smoke. To me this seems petty. I know damn well they can make a good ventilation system for a "smoking room" inside. I also think the laws like the one they tried to pass in Mass. about getting charged if your neighbors complain are asinine as well.

I try and be very considerate about smoking but, the best way to turn me into a dick is go way overboard about trying to make me feel bad about choosing to do so. You try and make my life miserable, and I'll certainly reciprocate.

You having to smell smoke for the 1/10 of a second it takes you to walk by me on the street is no more irritating, or dangerous to you than me having to hear your bratty little kid scream and cry as I pass you. If that does not fit, I can assure you I could find any one of a 1000 things to nitpick about.

I just hate the vilification of smokers, because it reminds me so much of the campaign against gun owners.

Can't you dislike second hand smoke w/o wanting to jail those who do smoke.

I don't mind not-smoking around other people, or being put in a separate area. Yes, it's a nasty habit, but it's my habit!

Its interesting to see the similarities between anti-smokers and anti-gunners. Tax it, vilify it, gradually ban it...eliminate it.

I have never smoked.  My wife does and promised that she would quit.  For a long time she lied to me about her quitting.  She stil smokes but now we have new rules.

1. No smoking in the house. If she wants to smoke in the house she has to find a different house to live in.

2. No smoking in the car.  If she wants to smoke in the car I will find a $200 beater instead of the $30,000 SUV.

Other than that no problems.  Ok now everybody tell me what an A**hole I am.

Does not seem all that unreasonable to me. If I found a woman I wanted to marry who did not smoke, I would be willing to meet some demands on the smoking issue.

I have mutual funds that invest in Philip Morris and one of the other butt companies, so puff on, my nic-fixated brothers and sisters!

I don't like the stench and I think people who are addicted to drugs oughtta get a grip, but it's their life.

And the fact that the PC people hate smokers is damn near enough to make me wanna start!

As for Stormbringer's point, I disagree.  Everyone dies someday, and usually incurs health costs in doing so.  Smokers tend to die shortly after they retire, so they do not draw Social Security or whatever the Canadian equivalent is.  Nonsmokers might be around 20 or 30 years after retirement, costing the taxpayers more money.

This is an extremely sore spot with me. I smoked half a pack a day for ten years. Quit cold turkey 5 years ago.

I don't mind cigarette smoke at all. Like it, actually. If you want to smoke, do it. Most smokers are very considerate about where they light up, and I can't stand the raving pussies who rant "My God, those disgusting, uncaring killers!! Tax them to Hell!! If I breath a whiff I will surely die!!" Then they get into their goddamned Ford Landraper XLT3000 Excursionary Land Yacht to drive their f*cking kids 2 miles to soccer practice. F*CK YOU!!

Thank you for reading.

I cant stand smoke, why should I be subject to a dirty filthy habit that I have chosen not to take part in? You smokers can smoke all you want but I dont want to breath it. I cant stand the people that stand in front of the doorway of stores so they can smoke making everybody who goes in walk through it, or the fu**ers that throw their butts out their car window, yes Ive had one come into my car.I hate to be stoped at a stop light in the summer with my window up and a/c on with someone waiting beside of me smoking when my A/C draws the smoke into MY car. Eating in a restraunt with a smoking section is like swiming in a swiming pool with a no pissing section, there is no such thing. You can smoke all you want but PLEASE not around me!

Most smokers could care less where they smoke, what they stink up, where there butts go or whose face their smoke goes in.  The actions of smokers are responsible for the rules & laws against smoking that they're all complaining about.

There's no reason on the face of the earth I should have to endure that foul stench at work, in a restaurant, in an airplane or anywhere else.  There's also no reason for the litter of discarded butts all over sidewalks, by curbs, on my front lawn or even out in the woods.

That smell makes me gag.

Tell us how you REALLY feel... LOL

BKVic and Norm_G

We stand out front by the door because we are not allowed to smoke anyplace inside. And no, not ALL smokers are inconsiderate. Most of us are considerate. That's like saying all gun owners are criminals and will shoot someone. Typical liberal mindset.

You know, I don't like smelling dogshit from the guy up the streets dog that crapped in my neighbors yard. I don't like to have to listen to someone's car stereo that has it turned up to loud. I don't like the burning oil from the 76 POS car in front of me at the red light. There are lots of things I don't like in life that I must put up with.

Perhaps you guys should consider your attitudes when you approach someone about their smoking when it bothers you. I'll go way out of my way to not bother someone who approaches me in a nice manner, but if someone comes off as a dick, I'll work real hard to piss them off worse.

In this day and time and what we know about tobacco I can not understand why anyone would be dumb enough to smoke.  It blows my mind.  The only problem is that usually smokers reproduce before they are taken out of the gene pool.  That means the stupidity will be passed down from generation to generation.  In the meantime all of us hard working people have to pay the health cost.  Makes me sick to think about it.

I'm curious.  Knowing what we all know about the dangers of smoking why do you do it?  It it because you think you are immune to the dangers or maybe that the dangers don't exist?  Or could it be that you know the dangers very well but the pleasure of doing it outweighs the risk?

Not trying to start an argument just curious.  By the way, both my parents smoked.  Maybe that is the reason I'm such a dumb redneck.  I'm still in the gene pool.

I try to be considerate of non-smokers in my presence.. no objections to non-smoking area when dining together, ask if they mind if I smoke, no smoke while we eat, and so on.  I do take issue with those who go overboard as our society seems to.

Ditto to the comments on unruly brats.. especially in the grocery store.. far more annoying than any amount of cigarette smoke.

What gets me most, is millions of $$$$'s went to insurance companies through tobacco settlements, yet no coverage is available for prescription quit-smoke aids as Zyban, Patch, etc.. What a f*@@##g joke!  Instead, they waste money on damn billboards from TM Marketing in MN, aimed at youth, who can't even drive yet to see the damn billboards along the highway.
Typical political correct BS!

No problem respecting non-smoking rights.. expect same in return.

Flash66 I have been smoking for 38 years, and have quit several times.   I have even quit drinking because they seem to go hand in hand to me anyway. So when I don't drink,I don't smoke.

And while I fight it for weeks at a time,I'm back to square one again and again. For the answer would be yes I know with out a doubt that it is bad for my heart, and lungs but have a really hard time quiting!

For some of us it is just hard to stop,so I would suggest if you don't smoke now, Don't start!

Wow, I am really impressed by the amount of people who have really strong opinions about this!

Anybody bought a beer in California?  They have that no smoking in bars thing, and it really sucked.  Unless they have come to their senses and repealed it recently.

I was thinking about quitting last week.  I finished my last cigarette, lasted most of the next day, and decided at the grocery store that I wasn't really ready to quit yet after all.

And I try to be very considerate around others, including walking away from the doorway I am smoking outside of.  The butts can be a problem, though.  Usually, if I see some on the ground already, I don't really sweat adding my own litter to the pile.

Yeah, that is a tough one.  I hate Kalifornistan's stupid laws and restrictions on individual freedoms, which aren't limited to cigs or guns for that matter.  On the other hand, over there I can drink a beer without being asphyxiated.  And the whole damn restaurant is a non-smoking section, which is sure OK by me.  Hate the laws, but gotta love the effects.

Nasty, filthy, habit. Just don't do it around me.

Guns? Nasty, filthy habit. Just don't own them around me.

Welcome to California. Please check personal choice & constitutional freedom at the state line.

Does the smell offend you? The sight of ugly people offends me. Should we ban them from public view?

Heard of The Tobacco Settlement? Ya know what the states which have received this windfall have begun to do with it? Pay for healthcare & smoking cessation programs?
NO!! They(Texas is one) have re-invested it in TA-DA!!!!! TOBBACCO COMPANIES!

This blatant hypocrisy can surely only be matched by some of the freedom-flag bearers who post on this board. "Ban tobbaccco, but us good libertarians truly believe that smack should be legal".

If it's that horrible, BAN IT! No, can't do that. Too much dough to be bankrolled from the taxes. Bad perfume pisses me off, Ban that shit too! Here in the midwest, we have corporate hog farms you can smell for miles. BAN PORK! Ever been caught in a traffic jam behind a city bus? BAN MASS TRANSPORTATION! I mean, the children need to breathe, right?

Is anyone's ankles getting tired from standing on that fence?

I do not smoke.  My wife does.  It's her life, but it's our life, too.  I'd like her to be around as long as possible, and smoking increases her risk of an early death.  I wish she did not smoke, but I'm not going to ask her to quit.  Hey, I'm fat and in poor physical condition - I could kick from a coronary tomorrow.  The only way someone quits is if they want to stop.  I know several people who have quit, cold turkey, so I know it can be done.  But you gotta wanna.  I know a few who've tried and failed, too.

I have read of studies that indicate that smokers actually cost less in the long run than non-smokers simply because they are likely to die sooner.

The same logic that leads to tobbacco and booze taxes leads to all other sorts of taxes. How about a tax on red meat, or a tax on candy and soda. How about a tax on ammunition? After all, the liberals know what is best for us.

Liberals are superhumans who are intellectually superior, and all knowing after they read the latest "study". Face it, they should be deciding how we live our lives. They know what is best for us and they sure know how to pull the wool over our eyes...

Tax increases are an unpopular political move. Sin taxing is a popular way to raise money. After all, it is for the children! These people who smoke, eat red meat, drink soda, eat candy bars, and own guns are a burden on the state. They cost the state zilions of dollars each year!

How many time have you heard this pathetic argument? This is why we are losing more freedom everyday to these communists!

These shitbags love to target groups who are on the wrong side of the latest "study". They like to fleece there pockets in order to slip in a socialist agenda.

I enjoy my ciggarrettes, if you dont like them, then I wont smoke them near you. Its that simple; common courtesy.

As an ex-smoker, the lingering stench that clings to everything is the thing that bothers me about being around smokers.

Having a smoking section in a restaurant or another public building... is like having a peeing section in a pool.

If you want to smoke, it is your life.  If you want to smoke in your house, fine, that's your shithole, not mine.  However, when we're in a public building, I don't want to have to breathe your smoke.  Second hand smoke has been proven to be carcinogenic, thus IS harmful to my health, so I have the right not to have to breathe it.  Catch a whiff on the street or outside, oh well, I can deal with that.

I think all in all, smoking is a waste of time, money, and life.  There are NO benefits.

The thing that really pisses me off is the anti-smoking TV commercials we have here in MA (big surprise). They have this tough looking guy almost in tears because "cigarettes killed my wife". Well, guess the fuck what. Nobody was holding a gun to her head and making her smoke. If she had left the smokes on a table and never picked them up, I don't think she would have gotten cancer by osmosis. When will people take responsibility for their own actions?
