The Things Passengers BringWorkforce Stories When is a pen not just a pen? The answer is when it doubles as a potential weapon. A TSO at Palm Beach International (Fla.) was working the X-ray machine when he came across an anomaly on the screen and called for a search of a passenger’s backpack. Inside, the responding Officer discovered a tactical pen, used commonly by law enforcement as a defense tool with its sharp aluminum-based point on one end and blunt portion on the other. A Supervisory TSO confirmed that item was a prohibited item. The police responded and issued the passenger a criminal summons to appear in court – under the state statute – for carrying a concealed weapon. He was cleared for travel and there were no flight delays. Oh, okay, it sounds like they were already prohibited, but it's still the TSA. |

why did he get a concealed weapon charge if it was considered a defensive tool?

Watch out all you guys who wear 511 pants... why are they weapons? |
|
What if I carried a bunch of very sharp pencils or just a regular ole pen? I know they aren't as rugged as surefire/benchmade pens but I can still cause damage with them. The TSA is just plain dumb...
|
|
I carry one of these everywhere.
Am I going to get in trouble now? ETA: Interesting blog I found about this here. |

There are enough potential Weapons I
carry already (normal everyday items) I try not to draw extra attention to myself. |

sharp aluminum-based point on one end and blunt portion on the other.
So, it is a pen at all? Or just a metal spike? |
|
A screw driver less than 7" in lenght is still good to go. I have some tools I use for compter repair work that double as a nice shiv when needed. |

|
Any standard metal pen can be used in that way.
Where it went screwy and caught the attention of the TSA is when they went all "tacticool" with the "its only a pen" (tongue in cheek) Its like saying a knife is a "novelty letter opener" or brass knuckles are a "paperweight" The tacticool crowd could not help but poke the bear and whines when they get their pepe slapped. I doubt youd have any trouble carrying an all metal pen still. |

When I was coming home from Iraq last year, TSA in Atlanta took my surefire flashlight because it had serrated edges.
I also handed over my pens and pencils, and he looked at me in a puzzled way. I simply replied I could stab you in the eye with one of them. He just nods and takes them. |

To ensure travelers' security, Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) may determine that an item not on the Prohibited Items List is prohibited.

Fuck it I'll drive and Zer0 can bail out teh airlines.
Why can't we just have a guy that stands in the front of the plane with an Uzi? You fuck up you get shot. or maybe a self destruct button on the plane in case it gets hijacked. Fuck the TSA and their affirmative action hiring practices. |

I fly all the time in 5.11s. Went through TSA at least 5 times this week in them. I have never been questioned nor given a second look.
They do sometimes ask about the Wilderness 'frequent flyer" belt though. They think the buckle is metal. |

I've been meaning to make myself an aluminum key chain bottle opener shaped like 4 inch " ) " that has a pen-sized divot in the center... |

I said that this* was going to happen when they started masrketing the things. Everybody said I was out of my minds....looks like I wasn't.

Tactical pens are basically kubatons with a pen jammed up inside of them.... if kubatons are banned it makes sense that a kubaton with a pen inside of it would be.

A whole kit full of expensive, durable and extremely sharp pens, pencils and drawing triangles. |

It's almost sad the way you deride a person who is carrying a fucking pen while supporting the notion that it's ok for a government agent to take a pen away from someone because it "looks mean." Truly, the pen is mightier than the sword. It is not OK for the TSA to smack anyone's peepee for carrying a fucking pen (or any other inanimate object). The federal government, and their agents are specifically prohibited from doing so in the Constitution. Since the 2nd Amendment is finally recognized as a civil right, perhaps you should grow a pair and get onboard with a little civil disobedience here and there. |

I wonder about the kinds of pens I use. Fountain pens are very pointy. A Parker "51" even has a shrouded nib, making it pretty stout.
