Superman Gets a Hipster Makeover

Superman has a new look, and the redrawn Man of Steel now more closely resembles a a vampiric Robert Pattinson or a sulky member of My Chemical Romance than a hunky matinee idol.

The new Superman will appear in "Superman: Earth One,"
a graphic novel by writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Shane Davis
that retells the superhero's origin story. While the iconic superhero
retains his dark mane and defined six pack, he now has a decidedly more
emo vibe –– pale, leaner, and brooding. (No need to get too worked up,
Superman loyalists: This new graphic novel series doesn't replace the
original comics, but rather will serve as a "reinterpretation" of his
younger years.)

Can we even call him the Man Of Steel? Or is he now the Man Of Self Loathing And Bad Poetry? I'm so sick of this emo shit tainting everything. Bad enough Hollywood raped my childhood with Transformers and GI Joe... this cuts back 2 generations further.

I saw that comic the other day and was disappointed that I didn't have anyone to share it with, cause I had the same reaction. You just made my day haha. Thanks!

Oldschool Superman - pointing to criminal scumbags he's about to deliver a beatdown on

New Superman - Softly weeps and scowls while performing some sort of a Frontside Goatse to "scare away" the criminal scumbags

Oldschool Superman FTMFW!

Ok after looking into it there is nothing emo about this new look on the character. That is all from the blogger.

This is going to be an alternate storyline that fills in a period of the character that hasn't really been explored in the comic continuum. It will focus on the how he became Superman and why he chose a life of service instead of using his abilities to his own advantage. It is essentially Smallville in comic form. The change in clothing from suits and ties to hoodies and jeans was done because he is a 21 year old in modern times that is hiding in real life. I found this about it:

For instance, there's a flashback scene to when Martha Kent finishes his uniform and gives it to him as a gift, hoping he'll go that way. He looks at it and says, in essence, "Shouldn't there be a mask?" She says no, that "when people see how powerful you are, all the things you can do, they're going to be terrified... unless they can see your face, and see there that you mean them no harm. The mask... is what you're going to have to wear the rest of the time."

Yup. Conflating two things solely on the basis of hatred is just lazy. This offends the high standards I reserve for hatred.

While not a definition, I can help to differentiate them:

Emos are most prominently found in high schools. They would be like a whiny version of goth. Prefer dark clothes, pale skin, thin. Moody and usually write crappy music or poetry. They hold onto the amusing (to others) idea that their depression makes them dangerous or evil or deep or interesting or some garbage like that. See the Twilight novels/movies for a sketch of this.

Hipsters are found on colleges/Universities or have failed out of them. They may have graduated but with a useless degree. There seem to be several different type of hipsters though I don't really feel like delineating them now. If 'dark' would the be self-description of an emo, then 'ironic' would be that for a hipster. In truth, both are actually quite awful at what they profess describes their lives but that is a side point. Actually smugness is probably a much more definable attribute for hipsters than irony. They think everyone (except themselves) are just product of culture or society. For some examples, see:

or for a sort of diet hipster:

The new comic might be an emo superman but i don't see any connection to a hipster superman.

Thanks for the explanation.  I read that sentence and it was like the scales fell from my eyes.

I see lots of overweight or out-of-shape hipsters riding fixie bicycles around town.  It's clear from their physical incapacity that they have no business riding a bike, much less one that only has one gear.  Yet, despite the fact that their physique (or lack thereof) makes them entirely unsuitable for riding a fixie, they persist –– because fixies are currently fashionable.

That, to me, is the epitome of irony.  And now, it all makes sense.

Emo - Gay with no tan, self respect or sense of style.  May or may not be out of the closet.

Christopher Reeves will always be the REAL superman in my book.
I like Smallville, but every now and then I pull out an old superman movie... dorky as hell, just like I remember them!  (And like them!)
Superman stood for "Truth, Justice, and the American way", late-model superman's seem to stand for "Moral Relativism, Compassion on Criminals, and Euro-weeny socialism"...
I'll take the former any day of the week...
But, yeah, Smallville is a fun show anyway...
