Honestly I've never had good luck with Bino's, and mostly got into carrying a monocular when I was still active duty. You can pick up nice monoculars on the cheap, and Vortex makes one that I think is in your price range.
Also, Monoculars are lighter and easier to carry. |

Steiner Military Marine 8 x 30. Right at $200. Rubber armored, reasonably compact, good glass.

This lets you stick your monocular to railings or on top of your pack as a feild expediant spotters scope, and they only weight a couple ounces if you get a plastic one. |

I looked through some small folding Stiener Predator binoculars that IIRC the owner said were around that price; they were pretty impressive for their size.

Look for some used Leupold Cascades or Nikon Monarchs.

Aren't binoculars better for depth perception over monoculars? I was wondering the same thing the OP asked and I haven't considered monoculars. Seems like a good choice as it would take up less space and weigh less.
