I went into the Verizon store yesterday to return our MIFI because we use more then 5gb/mth.. The sales guys tried to talk me into keeping it until this Thursday because they were going to announce new mobilebroadband plans..

This is what I was told..

5gb will be $50 instead of $60
new plan of 10gb will be $80
Overage charges would be in the $10 to $20/GB (instead of the current $50)

just thought I would share if anyone wasnt grandfathered in under the unlimited plan or needs more than 5gb/mth

All I can get is cellular or sat. And the 5gb limit sucks. 10 won't be much better. Need about 500.

Thats nothing .. Tmobile roaming data is 15$/meg!

dont travel to south africa and surf then leave the browser open....co workers bill was 18k$ and amazingly was not fired but the tmobile company account rep was.

Virgin Mobile has MIFI with unlimited data for $40/month. Uses the Sprint network (and only the Sprint network, no roaming on Verizon towers)

That is what we switched from.. I had no idea that amount of usage we were using before we got the verizon mifi, but after only a wk of use I quickly realized that 5gb wont be enough..

I am running a excel spreadsheet and right now, based on our average usage, I will hit almost 7gb in 30 days.. That is not downloading movies or streaming video

The biggest issue i have with the VM mifi is that it appears that the tower we pull from will drop from Evdo (up to 1.4 mb) to 1xRtt (150kbs) every so often.. Normally it only lasts <5 minutes and then it goes back to Evdo..

the MIFI was our only option so you do what you have do to to get dependable high speed internet. We had DSL for 4 yrs but it was very slow and very, very unstable..

Here is another company that I found that resells wireless broadband - although IF the new verizon plan actually happens it wont be that great of a deal..

Millenicom Wireless Broadband

The 5gb and 10gb plans use Verizon - have to use buy their USB device

The Bring Your Own Device and the unlimited plan (+50gb is investigated) are Sprint..

The goal for every freedom loving capitalist is efficiently operating markets with minimal dead weight loss. Like state owned enterprises and unions, oligopolies create conditions where supply and demand do not meet at their optimal intersection resulting in some quantity of dead weight loss.

Nobody is forcing us? The only alternative is no service at all which in this day and age isn't a reasonable one.

Wireless companies have generally been very profitable. Right now you can make the argument that the supply of 3G data bandwidth is limited and therefore the price is somewhat justified. However with the advent of 4G such as LTE, if the costs don't trend back downwards that's some serious bullshit on the part of VZW and AT&T.

The $ per GB is absurd really at the moment. I'm glad I have a grandfathered unlimited plan on AT&T for my iPhone; Maybe I'll stream Netflix to it all day to celebrate.

Both devices use the 1900mhz CDMA band. If you have signal strength problems, invest in a cell booster that does 1900mhz CDMA:

I recently got into this whole smart phone 3G/4G stuff. I received my EVO the other day signed on with the unlimited data plan from Sprint. The CS guy said something about the usage of data and if I go over 5gb per month there is a $20 charge.

So much for umlimited.

One thing that I saw on the sprint website was they offer a 4g/3g combined device/ plan.. The 4g is unlimited usage while the 3g is still 5gb

Will there be more 4g bandwidth than they have for 3g?

We get 5/5 bars in EVDO and 4 to 5 (out of 5) for 1xrtt I am very uneducated on stuff like this, BUT from researching online I read several in forums that said most of the time when it drops to 1xrtt is that the tower is overwhelmed and falls back to 1xrtt.. (sprint does not have as many towers as other carriers)

Can some education person comment on why it does drop to 1xrtt?

Would a booster work in that situation?

Holy hell! My family is pretty wired, it isn't unusual for three or four of us to be on the net at a time. The kids watch lots of video online, the wife and I both watch quite a bit of video online. We have four PC's, a PS3, an XBox360, a Wii, a Blu-Ray player and god only knows what else online. We have never went over 150GB in a month.

I ordered a similar product today - the Wilson Sleek - It has gotten very good reviews on a lot of different websites, so we will see if it keeps me in Evdo..

I run a small server hosting business. It would be nice to have hardwired service with low latency and high bandwidth.

I'd be willing to pay for anything decent but just to get a 1.5mbps T1 would run me $300/m. Not exactly the deal of the decade.

Verizon updated their website with the new rates and plans for anyone interested..

they now offer 1gb ($20), 3gb ($35), 5gb ($50) & 10gb ($80) plans.. Overage charges are $20/gb for the 1gb plan and $10/gb for the others

They also now charge you $100 for the MIFI - it was $50 with a $50 rebate..
