My company, Sikorsky, just released that a helicopter has achieved 250 knots in level flight.

The Sikorsky X-2 made that achievement today. It topped out at 260 knots during a shallow dive.

Reports state that the helicopter could have gone faster in level flight but todays test was pegged for 250 kts.

Contra-rotating rotors, a pusher propeller, and some kind of vibration reduction system similar in concept to noise canceling headphones. Pretty cool.

That is nice, but a helicopter has never taken me someplace I wanted to go; and of all the places they have taken me, I sure as hell did not want to get there any faster.

Psssst....hey OP, tell the engineers they put the fucking tail rotor on sideways!

As an ex-UH-1H crew-chief, I can say the UH-60 is a bad mofo. That X2 is surely a sign of things to come in rotary wing technology.

It did 250 knots during the level flight speed test. During the test flight that lasted 1.1 hours they also did a shallow dive at the same settings that gave 260 knots and pushed it to 260 with the help of gravity. Two different attitudes.

However, official speed records tend to be level flight.
