I apologize if this has been posted before. I searched the archives and used Google to search ARFCOM and could not find a thread on it. This is some messed up shit right here. The Flight 93 memorial in Pennsylvania will be colored and shaped like a red crescent and pointed to mecca.

This is from 5 or 6 years ago. It stirred up a bunch of shit. Something about the arch (crescent moon) and the dividing line from the epicenter of the arch thru the center of the arch was directed precisely towards Mecca. It was shitcanned after numerous protests. Have they decided to continue it?

They never stopped.  They made minor modifications and kept right on with most of the original design.

It doesn't occur to you that there are no corners in a semi circle and this way no one is slighted by having their name tucked away in an insignificant location? People see what they want to see. Get over it.

It's not changed.   It's still a crescent.  It still faces to Mecca. And the memorial spire still has a crescent on it.

I was surfing for some info and found that too.  It's starting to look like they didn't change a fucking thing.  According to the info I found the changed its angle from like two degrees north of mecca to three degrees south. What was the point of that?

Hmm, interesting.

I really want to think it's just an unfortunate, yet really obvious oversight, but I can't do it.

I mean, seriously, a big, huge fucking crescent, known the world over as the symbol of islam, built as a memorial to the heroes of flight 93?

They only added a single line of red trees.   Which don't join the crescent.  If they really wanted to change to a bowl, they should have moved the groves around the bowl in equal spacing and centered it on the Sacred Ground.

Like this:

WOW, the crescent is gone.  And I'm not even an Architect.

Somebody said that a plain one room court house should be built. The trails for all the shit stains would be held there, and hangings, then it would be a museum/memorial.
Simple.

Were 180 degrees out of balance here. Shits gonna fall over eventually.

Aside from the obvious symbology, they used eminent domain to seize the land.

Not really what the people on 93 were fighting for, one would guess...

Yep. Over 1400 acres were stolen via eminent domain for a crash site memorial.

The owners were more than willing to donate or sell the land near the crash site.  However the government demanded they sell over 1400 acres.  That's absolute bullshit, no matter how you slice it.

Design modifications

In response to criticism, the designer has agreed to modify the plan. The architect believes that the central elements can be maintained to satisfy criticism. "It's a disappointment there is a misinterpretation and a simplistic distortion of this, but if that is a public concern, then that is something we will look to resolve in a way that keeps the essential qualities," Murdoch, 48, said in a telephone interview to the Associated Press.

The redesigned memorial has the plain shape of a circle (as opposed to a crescent) bisected by the flight's trajectory. "The circle enhances the earlier design by putting more emphasis on the crash site, officials said in the newsletter. A break in the trees will symbolize the path the plane took as it crashed."   There is criticism that the redesign does not address any of the issues with the original design.

The redesign has been unveiled and can be seen at the NPS official web page for the memorial. Architect Paul Murdoch describes it as follows:

"The image is an aerial view from the bowl looking towards the Sacred Ground. To the left in the background, a walkway approaches from an arrival court along the edge of and overlooking the Sacred Ground. The walkway eventually widens in from a ceremonial gate, shown in bronze, and the wall of names, composed of 40 panels of 3-inch (7.6 cm)-thick slabs of polished white granite, 8 feet (2.4 m) tall, each inscribed with a name of the 40 heroes. Two walls flanking the gate are clad in polished white granite and the flight path is paved with black granite. Beyond the gate is the impact site, shown planted with wildflowers, and the hemlock grove beyond."

I don't want to sound heartless, but why do we need a memorial there? And that large. Most of that land has been taken away from taxpayers. It erks me to no end that the government thinks they can just take what they want.

Except it's not a circle.   They added a line of trees to the end crescent, and they didn't touch the crescent.   Leaving the Crescent, pointing to Mecca and the Islamic sundial intact.   In otherwords they did enough to hide what was going on from people too engrossed by American Idol to notice.
