I've been on this board for a while now and I honestly think I've seen Charleton Heston mentioned twice in about 4 years.

I always took Soylent Green as a dead serious movie as to what happens when American government oversteps it's bounds.  You don't end up with opression, just least common denominator equality with opression as a side effect.

And let's not forget he marched with blacks and was part of the civil rights movement long before it was fashionable.

And he was an outspoken gun rights advocate (in case you didn't know).

So step up to the plate you damned dirty arfcommers.  Don't be thwarted by the NRA-haters.

"From my cold dead hand" > "Wolverines!"  - admit it, the first one is funner to do!

My cooking group is having a Soylent Green themed night which is what made me post this.

Yes! We are featuring the ultimate, "you are what you eat," movie! Join us to watch this 1973 classic with the very fine (over)acting skills of Charlton Heston and eat some food inspired by the movie. For those of you who know the movie - might be asking... uh how? My answer to you - be creative! What are the foods of the future? What foods are most entrenched in the continuing prosperity of our culture? What foods would be most valued should our resources be diminished to the extent that we can't grow fresh food? And - last but not least - as everything tastes like chicken - perhaps soylent green does too!

He was good for the NRA though!

I think Heston was one of those admirable people with a less than admirable career, where an actor like William Holden had a stellar career with a less-than-stellar personal life.  Too bad, because I like Holden's work, and have been told I look like him.  I personnally will always favor the person who didn't let his star power corrupt him.

I would have rather had him as President than a Bush.

Little did they know it would turn out to be the vice rights/ affirmative action movement.

What makes you think people here don't like Charlton Heston?

He did die a couple of years ago.  That could be why he hasn't been mentioned much.

I have a lot of respect for him and I think most everyone else here does too. As mentioned above, he was good for the NRA. It's a shame he couldn't have been here longer.

Plenty of love for Chuck around here.

A few will flame him and tell you he "supported the GCA of '68."

I don't know if that is true or not, but times were a LOT different then, and the bottom line is, he was a true champion of the Second Amendment even if he might have made a mistake or two.  (Show me someone who gets through life without making any mistakes and I'll buy you a drink).

RIP Mr. Heston.

Charles Heston was a 1990's icon of the gun rights movement which pre-dates 90% of this site's involvement with firearms.

Heston spoke on the radio in favor of the 68 gun control act and thought Ak-47's and  assault weapons should be banned . No love for a Fudd. he was Zimbo before his time.  Notice you never see him with a semi always a Fudd gun.

love heston. I met him a  few years back here in Provo and got him to sign an American Rifleman Presidents column for me.

He was a super classy guy.  Stood up, despite being in pain and being interrupted by me,  looked me in the eye and introduced himself.

one of my favorite famous people cause he had the balls to stand up for what he believed in.

A few quotes:

NRA CONVENTION

June 6, 1998

"...Mr. Clinton, sir, America didn't trust you with our health-care system. America didn't trust you with gays in the military. America doesn't trust you with our 21-year-old daughters, and we sure, Lord, don't trust you with our guns.."

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––-

SPEECH TO NATIONAL PRESS CLUB

September 14, 1997

...I simply cannot stand by and watch a right guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States come under attack from those who either can't understand it, don't like the sound of it, or find themselves too philosophically squeamish to see why it remains the first among equals: Because it is the right we turn to when all else fails. That's why the Second Amendment is America's first freedom...

Two Words:  You Tube.

If you're going to post references to two of the best movie lines of all time, you need to provide video for the young'uns.

Two very different movies, BTW.  But both showed Heston's range of acting.

Sort of.  He was a trojan horse of sorts, but he did make the NRA a lot more palatable to people who didn't know it well because he was a man of excellent character.
