Question in title.
1st post wins. Respect is not earned through sheep skins.
If you are asking which are perceived as the most difficult I would say hard sciences i.e. chemistry, biology, physics , engineering, medicine. |
At my university, Nursing.
Its the toughest degree with the highest chance of professional employment. ETA: I have alot of respect for the physics, engineering, mathematics and chemistry majors. All are difficult programs. |
Engineers of course. I put child psychology at the bottom of the list.
Engineering, Economics, Medical Research. Which school matters a lot.
Sociology, Journalism, or Communications -take your pick.
Edit: Nevermind, I misread the question. |
MD, JD.
The accuracy of the public perception is of course highly suspect. |

Quoted: MD, JD. The accuracy of the public perception is of course highly suspect. Although he didn't specifically say, I'm guessing the OP meant undergraduate degrees. However, I do agree with your post-graduate degree statement. |
Doctor.
Maybe engineer, but it helps if it's a vague uh, what word am I looking for type, like nuclear or bio. |

What nobody said accounting?
(accounting major here) The CPA test scares the mess out of me. |

Doesn't matter. The real question is whether the individual has a philosophic personality - that is, has a true love of knowing the truth wherever it may lead. These are the people who should be most respected amongst the educated class, and they can come from any degree.

who makes the most money? that's the one people respect/want to be.
i went to bla bla bla and got my degree in bla bla bla. great now enjoy your little box, 60 hours a week, and 40k a year salary. |

After the end of the year, its going to get harder, because they are incorporating international accounting (I-GAAP) into the exam. I'm pretty screwed because they don't really teach much I-GAAP in college. |

______ Engineering would be my guess. Most young engineers think so. But I would go with any medical PHD. You get "Dr." before your name and that means something to most people, when they find you are not a medical doctor its drops off a bit. |

Undergrad degrees, from a standpoint of intellectual respect? Probably the hard sciences or math. There's a lot of difficult material to master. The general public might see "respect" differently, ie how much money graduates make.
The hard sciences have had scary-smart people building up a body of knowledge for centuries that has huge depth and breadth. As an undergrad you're not going to learn it all, but you'll probably get a grand tour of your field. |

Not criminal justice, unless you like working retail management.
My brother, a high-level manager, once told me that a resume with a military academy on it always grabs attention.

It is not titles that give luster to men, but men that give luster to titles.

My theoretical degree in physics generally gets some respect.
I am always surprised at how much people respect history majors.
(I don't give my own degree the credit that many other people give it, except when I'm trying to sell myself) During my undergrad career, I always had a lot of respect for business majors- because of how they carried and conducted themselves. Of course, my University's School of Business had very high standards. I can't comment on on the academic end... |
Quoted:
I am always surprised at how much people respect history majors. The job opportunities they open up usually don't pay jack shit, but there is a lot to be said for someone who understands human nature (and a lot of other important things, for that matter) as well as someone with a good grasp of human history can. History majors are often great in leadership positions for that reason. |
definitely engineering.
Those guys work their asses off. Physics and the rest of the natural sciences is a close second. |
Quoted: Yeah, that's what I've heard. My dad is a lawyer and my great uncle owns his own accounting firm. Certainly not easy. That said, putting rapists, murders and ruthless Mexican drug dealers behind bars sounds much more appealing than public accounting. Quoted: What nobody said accounting? (accounting major here) The CPA test scares the mess out of me. I've heard the CPA exam is much harder than the bar exam. |

Military +10 years of experience and a Degree..... The one's that Demand the most respect you will not know because they are held in the depths of the FBI, CIA, Homeland Security, and the Secret Squirrels.

At least I sure as hell am going to try and see if it is so. |

Engineering. Because it takes a lot of studying and a lot of beer. There is a conflict there which adds immeasureably to the difficulty.
As an engineering major, I always gave props to the Veterinary Medicine students - They have a tougher curriculum than pre-med, and tend to be a lot more down-to-earth.

Quoted: Engineering. Because it takes a lot of studying and a lot of beer. There is a conflict there which adds immeasureably to the difficulty. College students always have that conflict. The difference is, some majors are more intense than others in terms of that conflict... |

Underwater Basket Weaving....followed by an MS in Gender Studies...

Comme ce, comme ca.
If a person has managed to make it thru an engineering degree, you know that they at least know how to solve problems. Problem is, their social skills may not be worth a hoot and since a lot of businesses deal with people, that might not help. A lot of people on the outside world look down at non doctorial psychology types, but if you are running a business, you may want them because they know how to get along with people which can be useful for getting customers. People sneer at English degrees but one thing about those degrees is that it keeps the person remembering that there are other people in the world, that it isn't just about them. Then there are those degrees which are really quite useful....but unless you are in that degree, most people on the outside look at them as useless. Most people think geography degrees are only about what they learned in high school on that subject, what the states and capitals are or using maps like a road map. But if they knew it was about mapping anything, even the human nervous system, then they might see it differently. It depends.......................... _____________________________________________________ (When the Starman is asked what he does. "I make maps." "Make any money?"––night cook giving him a ride "No, just maps.", (w,stte), "Starman") |
Quoted: Psychology. My dad calls that major "pre-unemployment." Unless you're going to stick it out until you receive your PhD, it's pretty worthless. An exception to this is I/O Psychology with which a Master's will make you great money. |
