People like Janis Joplin, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, etc. would never make it now because they couldn't win the beauty pageant that music has become.

Agreed. I'm 42 and I'd much rather listen to Taylor Swift then Bob Dylan or Janis Joplin, they both sound like shit. Joplin sounds like she gargled with crushed glass to get her voice to sound like it did.
