I have a 700 ADL in 7mm. Other than the craptastic trigger pull from the factory it's a pretty good gun.
I'm currently using a Savage in .308. After using the Accu-Trigger, I'd never go back to the remington |

I will say though I like the fit/finish of a Remington 700 over a Savage. |

The aftermarket supports them really well for different things like triggers, bottom metal, recoil lugs, etc. I personally am a fan of the Rem 700, and I've worked on the Rem 700, Winchester Model 70 and the Montana 1999 (which is essentially a Model 70).

Good for anything up to coastal browns; I would go bigger for those.

REM 700 ADL in .30-06 + some of my handloads = awesome accuracy for a gun with zero tuning.
It's no accutrigger, but I don't mind it. Slap a burris on top and you're GTG. |

next to my 788 it is my most accurate rifle i own. It will group under and inch at 100 yds. it is a 700 bdl left hand model wood stock and iron sights.

Riflebasix makes a good drop in trigger for around $150 IIRC. I've got one in my 700P and it makes it feel almost as good as the Accu-trigger in my Savage bolt rifle.
I also have an ADL in 30-06 and that is a fantastic rifle as well. You really can't go wrong with a 700 IMO. |

I hate to say it but if you're buying new I'd rather have the Savage as well. Second the 06 being fine up to large bears.

Outstanding rifles! Stainless steel with a synthetic stock will be more resistant to wet conditions than a blued steel/wood stocked model.

The only thing wrong with them is that they're too damned pretty. I'd get a stainless/synthetic if I was still up north so I wouldn't worry about ruining a nice finish during a week of rainy hunting season. The trigger on the 700 will drop to 3.5 pounds pull weight with a broken glass sear if you know what you're doing.

Speaking Strictly of finish I prefer the CDL to the BDL as I do not like the glossy finish on the wood and prefer a matte or satin finish like the CDL.

I bought a used one for my birthday a few years ago back when I had money. Turned out to be a 1977 model with an obvious trigger job and 'pretty' cross-hatch looking chrome design on the bolt, black synthetic stock, Nikon 4x12, for $365 from a local shop. It shoots my reloads just a hair like the barrel may have had a good bit of rounds through it, bit accuracy is more than acceptable to me.
I would LOVE to have an original wooden stock or a more 'tactical' synthetic one, as the current one is warped a little bit and I had to file one side down in order to bed it more. Overall, I give it a .25 out of .30 inches.

No love for Browning? Years back I went back and forth between the 700 BDL and A Bolt II Browning. Almost went with the Remmy though at the last minute I went the Browning. Really liked the 60 degree bolt and shoots better than me. I'm happy with it.

If you are going to get just one hunting rifle, a Rem BDL in 30.06 would be a great choice. You won't regret it later.

A .308 with a proper hand load is darned close to a 30-06 and if we (or when we) have a problem with bans and ammo drying up, 30-06 is going to dry up a lot sooner than .308.

I have a Remington M700 & a Tikka T3, and I would choose a Tikka T3 Lite over the Remington ADL.

i replaced the stock on my with a polymer free floating stock and had the barrel refinished but my 7mm mag 700 has been taking game for my family the last 45 years. still works like a champ and has never been in a safe or guncase and probably has thousands of hours of outdoor exposure.
Oh my grandfather had a trigger mod done before he handed it down to me so im not sure about original trigger action. |

Given the QA issues I have seen with Remington the past few years, I wouldn't buy it unless I could inspect the entire rifle. I saw a NEW Remington in the store with a muzzle crown so bad that I noticed it from 5 feet away, it was bad enough that one would have to send it back to Remington or have a gunsmith do a bit of surgery on it. I have seen others that were quite rough, a sad testament, I used to remember when a Remington was the standard of excellence.
I am not anti-Remington by any means and if one of their rifles is made right, you will likely be happy with it. |

I Have a .308...an enexpensive Savage WITHOUT the accutrigger. I am just looking at something that will last forever and be able to find parts for in the future. If you don't want / need iron sites, I would get the CDL. I like mine except for the shitty factory trigger. If I were going to buy another bolt action rifle, I would probly get a Savage. I have a Savage in .17 HMR, and its by far the best factory trigger I have ever shot. Its also a tack driver.

While I really want a CRF-based bolt mechanism, the nice gloss wood 700 BDLs in '06 with the irons are extremely tempting for me.
I like irons on my rifles, and have heard of too many close calls close in with optic-only rifles (unexpected boar close to dusk, etc). I'd say go for it, if the QC seems alright. You can always have a trigger job done. But the mag conversion posted earlier makes me |

My wife uses one (stainless/synthetic) for deer hunting. She loves it, shoots it well, and has killed a number of deer with it. The trigger was EXCELLENT from the factory, and it is quite accurate––

700BDL in a 30-06. Probably one of the most common rifles in PA.

My ADL is internal box mag only which is a PITA to unload. My savage has a detachable magazine which rocks after a day of hunting. |
