I used to have a 4cly jeep and it was all it was flat out out straining at 75-80 and had nothing in reserve

Why would you want to drive a 4 banger pick up 80 or 90 mph?

I have a 99 regular cab 4x4 4cyl 5sp, so I know it won't be directly applicable to you. I get around 19-20 mpg city and up to 24-25 highway. My truck is fine at 75 and the engine has plenty of oomph left. However, I'm not really confident in the handling past 75, it starts feeling a little vague and scary to me.

I have an 08 Tacoma 4cy, manual trans, 4x4 single cab, cab height shell and always carrying 100 pounds of crap in the bed. My commute is 10 miles one way through a small town, average 45 mph with ~6 red lights. I get a solid 21mpg with the AC wide open.

I've never gotten less than 20mpg, or more than 23.

Highway driving is fine but running 80-90 you won't have much left in reserve even when dropping it into 4th and revving the hell out of it.

I drive pretty damned conservatively and rarely take it over 3k rpm.

My 2006/4cyl/5speed averaged 20-23.8 MPG, never got 24 and I would record every tank.  I never got less than 20 with it.

Very good on the highway.  I drove from West Texas to PA and back (back with a full load of stuff) with zero issues.  I just wish it had cruise control and was an xtra cab, as the seats don't recline much in the straight cab.

I never pushed mine to 90, but it will run comfortably at 70 and I know I did 80 in some places, but not sustained.

I sold it because I my wife's car was totalled by hail and I bought her a new one.  Eventually I sold that, my 2006 Taco and got a Jeep J/K.

The only thing that ever went wrong in 50,000 miles was a clutch cylinder under the clutch pedal started leaking and it cost around $250 to fix.  Otherwise, I did nothing else but tires, filters and oil.

If I still had a need for a pickup, I would buy a Taco V6 xtracab 4x4 auto.

I'll tell you about my '09 V6 Auto, simply because of the 80-90 mph speeds you ask about.

If I can go on a back highway and keep my speeds at 55-60, I can get 22-25 mpg depending on conditions and load.

If I go 70 on the interstate, I get 17-20.

If I go 75-80, it's always less than 18 (I don't speed much).

Trucks just aren't made to be very aerodynamic, and your gas mileage will suffer greatly at higher speeds no matter what engine you have.  Check out similar trucks on Fuelly.com and see what the real world averages are.  Looks like the overall 4cyl taco average is centered on 22 mpg.  You can scroll down and see specific vehicles by year.

23-26mpg mixed city/hwy but primarily city believe it or not



love my truck.  i never drive faster than 65-70mph though, and it's not straining there.  



you have to let them rev a little before you grab another gear if you're in a hurry though

I had a 97.  I got 23 one time, but the average was around 19 mpg.

It was good in the mud, and I could get on the highway, set my cruise on 85, and have no problems.

I miss that truck.

I have the exact truck you are asking about.   It's no frills manual locks, windows, etc.
I get around 20 mph in town.  I go 90 on the interstate no problem.
