I had a lot of gin & tonics for a period of about a month with the Seagrams Extra Dry.  It was amazing for a while, but I finally got bored of it.

You'll love it. Make sure that you get a diet, though. The bitterness of the aspartame sort of mimics the taste of tonic water. Non-diet isn't as good. I've researched this drink thoroughly over several years!

I love Gin.

At home it's usually Gordons London Dry:

Or Hendricks:

I also like Bombay original (red label), not Saphire, and Beefeaters.

Segram's - ah, not so much - I just don't care for the flavor.....

And I like it straight on the rocks - no filler.

Perfect for novelty drinks or company who come to your house you don't like that much. I always have "well" liquor on hand.

New Amsterdam or Hendricks while I'm still able to taste the quality. After about 4 doubles I switch to Barton.

As far as drinks fo I like gin and tonics or gin and grapefruit juice.

I tend to agree with you on Tanqueray, imo it is to heavily flavored (juniper) and the alcohol content is a bit high to make it a decent sipping Gin.

This thread makes me want to try some gin.  Can you drink gin straight or on the rocks?  (It seems like most don't) Would sprite suffice in lieu of tonic and lime?

You can use sprite, or 7up. I prefer a gin and 7 over a gine and tonic.

I'm not sure you would want to drink gin straight. Your tongue may shrivel up.

Substitute redbull for limeade, lemonade, orange juice, etc. New Amsterdam is the best I've had

I drink mine both neat (straight), and on the rocks.
Sometimes I'll toss in a couple of olives.
Personally I don't use tonic but many of my friends do.  It will be up to you.
Gin is a VERY VERY acquired taste, I'd recommend buying a somewhat top shelf gin if you've never had it before because bad gin is nasty.

Little old school Gin & Tonic with lime. Brand insensitive

Sometime in 1981, I woke up at about 4:00am on a picnic table outside the rec center at Southern Illinois University (the one across the street from the towers).

I still had a gallon bottle of gin in my hand. Oh, it was bad.

I have not touched a drop since, and probably never will.

I've seen a couple posters that are recommending New Amsterdam gin.
Not to knock other people's taste, but when this first showed up in my local mart, I picked up a bottle.  Honestly, it is the only gin in 39 years I've poured down the drain.  Did I get a bad bottle / bad batch?  I've drank Gilbeys, Seagrams, Beefeaters, Tanquerary, Boodles, Bombay, and Bombay Sapphire in my day (and probably a couple others I can't remember), but DAMN, MAN, NA was simply undrinkable!!!
Tell me I got a bad batch, please, and I'll try it again.

ETA to add Hendricks as one I've had a couple times.  Okay, but I'm not overly fond of cucumber.  Interesting for a time, but not something I will keep on hand.

It was on sale at my local Fry's so I bought a bottle for $20.
I didn't like it either - I didn't toss it out, I eventually choked it down.
I'll not buy it again.
So you are not alone.....

I have spent a great deal of time behind the bar and have sampled many bottles of gin.  Citadelle gin is where it's at.

Never had anything better....
