I just got an EMG done and it turns out I have mild carpal tunnel in both hands.  I'm set to talk to the doc in a few days about surgery.  

I always thought the carpal tunnel gets blocked up with scar tissue or some crap (similar to how cholesterol builds up in your arteries).  I thought surgery was suppose to clear that stuff out.  After talking to a friend, it turns out the surgery actually involves permanently cutting the entire Transverse Carpal Ligament in half!

What are the long term implications of this?  Will it mess with handgun or rifle shooting?  Would it be a disqualifier for the military?  That big of a ligament in your hand has to serve some important function...

If it matters, the doctor I'm going to see specializes in endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery.

Carpal tunnel release decreases pain, nerve tingling, and numbness better, and restores muscle strength. Still, most people are helped by this surgery.

The length of your recovery will depend on how long you had symptoms before surgery and how badly damaged your median nerve is. If you had symptoms for a long time, you may not be completely free of symptoms after you recover.

My brother had this done.

He has the carpal tunnel because of already fapping enough for one lifetime.

From the picture you posted you're clearly an android, why not just go see the Director of Robot Arm Repair?

Just kidding, good luck! I know someone with a similar ailment who elected not to have surgery, and he's in constant pain almost every day now.

Do yourself a favor and find a chiropractor (or other specialist ~PT, whatever) certified in Active Release Technique.

Many cases diagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome have symptoms caused primarily by nerve irritation other than at the carpal tunnel.

Without going into all the details -because usually it's a complete waste of time in GD- I am a DC and have had many patients who were improperly DXd with CTS and ultimately got full relief from treatment of other areas.

I will watch this thread a bit and check PM's if you are interested in more info.

To expand just a little bit, if you do/have experience(d) symptoms anywhere other than your hand please get a second opinion (and hopefully at least a trial of manual care) from a DC or other manual therapist before undergoing surgery.

I have carpal tunnel in both hands and nerve damage in both as well (service connected).

Surgery is a last resort from everything I've read. I have an acquaintence that had the surgery, and it was an epic failure.

Do your best to avoid the surgery. strech. work as ergonomically correct as possible. Don't over do it. wear wrist braces at night.

I am sure that is a legitimate medical treatment. But it really sounds like something a seedy asian massage parlor would offer.

I work at the other end....I've released the Tarsal Tunnel ligament (similar, and can create similar problems).

Before I do surgery, I try lots of things (including PT), orthotics, injections, etc. and will order an MRI to ensure that the ligament is entrapping the nerve (or if there is a space occupying lesion...varicosity, lipoma, etc. in the area causing the problem).

Release often helps the patient.

After years of pain that I attributed to arthritis, I was diagnoses by my GP and a neurologist as having moderate carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists.  On 8/13, I had surgery on my left wrist. I was given a mild general anesthesia. The procedure lasted about 15 minutes. I woke up almost immediately when returned to the recovery room and was told that I could leave as soon as my head cleared. 20 minutes later I was on the road out of town. (my wife driving) . Total time in hospital - 3 hrs., no pain or discomfort whatsoever. I was told I could drive after 24 hrs., and I did....no problem. I can't wait to get the other side done.

FYI: I was told by my local physicians and the surgeon that they would not do the endoscopic procedure for two reasons; recovery time is the same for both procedures and the endoscopic procedure is a matter of running a pencil-thick instrument through an already crowded tunnel passage, (which is the root cause of the problem) with the potential to  cause further damage to nerves, etc. The surgeon said that the  carpal tunnel endoscopic procedure is mostly marketing hype.

I was having nerve pain that was causing tendonitis-like pain in my forearm and up into my shoulder. All pain has gone now and I feel much better. I hope your results are the same. Good luck!
