After mulling over different rifles, I've decided to build my own. Now, which one would the Hive suggest & do i have to go through an FFL for this?

So long as you're not building them to sell, you likely won't need a FFL.

Also, build your own.  It's cheaper, it's easy and gives you a sense of pride.

I'm not that mechanically inclined, so it depends on the features of the lower

You have to buy the lower through an FFL.

Unless you find a FTF private seller in your state.

Everything else is not considered a "firearm".

Waitaminnit.

IL?

You need to check your local laws there Sparky.

Parts of IL you need a license to THINK about a gun.

Private party purchase FTF: No FFL (at least in Nevada).

Online purchase: FFL.

Dealer purchase: FFL.

Oh, we have resources here for newbies ; http://www.ar15.com/content/guides/assembly/lower/

Should only take you ~1hr, plus the time looking for the front take down detente after you launch it across the room. I can do them in about 15min.

$0.75 1/4 inch clevis pin from Lowes, Home Depot, or any other hardware store makes a nifty Front-takedown Pin tool, and saves about 8 bucks over the commercial versions.

I dont. What features would one lower have over another that would determine whether you "built your own" or bought a complete one?

I priced out a bulid with that lower, the RRA lpk and stock would put me right at 200.

That one for 170 is a pretty good deal, but I suppose you could squeak close to that not using a name brand lpk and stock.

At 200, it saves about 40 to 80 bucks depend on where you got it for a complete RRA lower. So not sure how much it is worth.

Where do you live in IL?

Not cook county or Aurora I presume?

Depending on where you live, I may have some options for you.

Also, this would be better asked in the tech or hometown forum...not GD
