I have 5 bucks wagered that Bob Dylan is a certain type of music.  I won't say it, so my friend doesn't feel like I influenced this poll.

Help me solve this, ARFcom.

I would say folk.

But music evolves. Like AC/DC for instance, used to be HEAVY METAL. Now it's just seen as Hard Rock.

Technically, it's folk music.

But he has the lyrical pronunciation of a deathmetal singer.

Which song is this:

Outsoomm in mah moomth dismanth
A mammamath dith maawwwl
Doohm Midahms Muurgh ammonthcingth
Ammthuh mind megamth to mowmmmm!

I've been listening to AC/DC for over 30 years and have never considered it heavy metal. Never heard anybody call it heavy metal either.

ETA sorry for the hijack. Bob Dylan = folk

Dylan started as folk.  Loved Guthrie, emulated him for a while, etc.  He left the folk scene when he went electric.  He cheesed off a big portion of his fanbase but rock n' roll was where it was at, and I think in a way Dylan just wanted to do that typical tragic artist thing where they try and make their fans mad, sort of like Nirvana with In Utero.

So, sorry to say, poll fail, he was both.  If you want more evidence, Sorcese did a documentary a while back for PBS on Dylan that was pretty good.

Dylan is misunderstood.  He mostly delves in religious music.  Not folk, not rock, not country.  Those genres are only tools for him.

Have a nice day.

Love him or hate him, doesn't matter.  Fifty years from now people will know who Dylan was, heavy metal artists will be little more than a footnote.

To characterize him and his works correctly, one must realize that his songs were mostly stories and that is more synonymously related to folk music.

How'd I do?

There's only two kinds of music. Music that sucks and music that doesn't suck. Dylan doesn't suck.

Folk. And he should have stuck to songwriting. His voice sucked 30 years ago, and I worked his show about 8 years ago in Atlanta. He sounded like Donald Duck huffing helium.
