Picked up some 17.99 for 20 rounds  but the days of cheap .308 are gone.

What do you think of this round for my M1A?

I cant amagine it not working good on both 2 legged critters and 4 legged critters?

Only concern would be soft primers and slam fires because all I have used in my M1A has been surplus ammo???

That is what I use for an elk load in my Norinco M1A. It takes the animals down so it should work just as well on bad guys.

There is cheaper .308 showing up now if you want to take a look. I think even www.ammoman.com has it cheaper right now.

any exposed tipped round at that range is pretty much going to fragment all over the place once it hits flesh. Maybe not though, could just pass on through though I highly doubt it.  I'm pretty sure it's gonna get the job done though.

no issues with soft primers though?

No doubt 150 gr. .308 will get the job done if you do your job.  No doubt at all.

Any .308 round will stop most anything short of a grizzly bear....unless it's shot a bunch of times or hit just right.

With regards to accuracy, the twist rate of your barrel will be a bit better suited to one grain weight than another.

Hornady makes a 155gr ballistic tip.

i consider the old school 150 or 180 gr winchester silver tip to be one of the best hunting rounds ever devised. i've taken deer, speed goats, hogs and an elk with mine. anytime i stumble across a box of these loads i snatch them up.

It should be fine, unless your ranch attracts Graboids.

take it to the range and find out.  Only load two though.  Check the primer of the second round if it doesn't go off. If it looks like a chambered round on an AR you should be fine. The primers aren't THAT soft. Manufacturers have taken these sorts of things into consideration due  to liability I'm sure.

it will drop a grizz, if its hit correctly.

i read an article yesterday of a cowboy in B.C. who shot hundreds of grizz with a 30-30. one of them a charge at less than 40 yards. right in the melon.

My only complaint would be the price.

Look oline, Privi Partizan makes some good 150gr SP .308 loads that are a few bucks cheaper and will work just as well.
AIM surplus usually has a good selection.

I have shot  couple of boxes of Win. 150 gr. P.P. through my M1A with no primer issues.

Shoots pretty accurately too.

I've got a couple mags of this for my M1A.  It's about the 12th gun I'd grab from my safe for home defense, but it would certainly lay a smackdown on the target if needed.

FWIW, Federal Power Shok .308, 150gr SPs(Speer makes the projectile, IIRC) can be had at Wal-Mart for $13 per twenty.

It is my cheap, non-TAP, buy-a-box-week SHTF hoarding ammo.

150 gr Win Power Point is good ammo.  Reasonably accurate and reasonably affordable (for a soft-tipped bullet).  No issues in my M1A or bolt gun.

Which Wallmart? I'm moving to Louisville the end of next week. That is a good deal for in store pricing.

I have never had a problem with "soft primers" out of my M1A, FAL or AR10.

I have found the Federal Premium Vital-Shok 165 Grain Sierria Gameking BTSP to be VERY accurate in my M1A and my Remington M700 VSSF.
It groups the same and hits at the same point of impact as my hand loaded 168 Matchkings. I love that round.

Unless what you're shooting at is hiding behind a brick wall or plate steel, it should perform quite well.  Is the M1A susceptible to a bent operating rod, like the M1?

FWIW  I use both 308 (AR-10) and 3O-06 (Bolt Rifle) 168gr Winchester Ballastic Tip when deer hunting.  Devastating round.

Isn't there an issue with the pressure curve of factory .308 vs. 7.62x51 in the M1As?  Op rod issues and all. .308 is a higher pressure and has a different "bang" build up than .mil 7.62x51.

I'm pretty sure that you have that the other way around.

The important difference is again pressure, however it is a mirror problem to the .223/5.56 issue. A 7.62x51mm NATOs maximum average pressure is 50,000psi, where as a .308 Winchester is 62,000psi! That is a very significant gap. This can cause more than simply putting undo stress on the rifle, it is potentially extremly hazardous, especially in older military surplus rifles rechambered to 7.62x51mm, which can have even weaker recievers meant for older, less pressure ammo like a 7x57 Mauser. DO NOT fire commercial .308 out of a 7.62x51mm rifle. Fortunately there are not many modern rifles chambered in 7.62x51mm but it never hurts to check with the manufacturer.

Are the .308 Winchester and 7.62x51 NATO one and the same?" The simple answer is no. There are differences in chamber specs and maximum pressures. The SAMMI/CIP maximum pressure for the .308 Win cartridge is 62,000 psi, while the 7.62x51 max is 50,000 psi. Also, the headspace is slightly different.

We will discuss headspace issues and M1As next week with 'coastie...

so would an M1A Scout loaded with a twenty round mag of good soft point ammo
make a good defense gun when in grizzly country?.
lots of folks depend on a .44 mag or a .454, with six shots. it seems like a mag full
of twenty shots, each about 3 times the energy of a .44. would be a good idea.

Oh, i knew there was a difference. I've just been out of the 308 game for so long I've forgotten which was which.

Ron Smith of Smith Enterprises once told me to avoid bullet weights of over 175 grains due to the op rod on the M1A/M14.
