My doctor (s) always cheerfully accept Federal Reserve Notes.
What is wrong with using MONEY to pay for goods and services ?
People's continued willingness to involve third parties in each of their transactions saddens and confuses me.

Our local hospital system has a plan that we use. I think family rate is $1100/month and its good coverage. For my wife and I its $700 or so

Golden Rule. It's under United Healthcare. I have major med with an accident rider and HSA.

Hopefully you never need a pacemaker or heart surgery. Cancer would suck too. Unless you have hundreds of thousands if not millions at the ready some form of insurance is smart.

Aetna, full medical/dental, $170/month, has steadily increased from $100 for the past 6 years (not so bad).

I'm 25 and in good health, low deductible, good coverage limits.

I'm an eletrical contractor, and for what it's worth, my health insurance has MORE than paid for my medical bills compared to if I had to pay them out of pocket.

In a worst case scenario, I can't imagine not having some form of catastrophic coverage.

Yea Im actually a contractor at BCBS. I dont know if they would offer me a discount or not. Hopefully the ins is only temp. until I get a full time time position and stop contracting. It may just be chaeper to pay as I go???? Im in great health and never get sick so its mainly for the wife and little one

There's nothing wrong with paying out of pocket for the small stuff––but the fact is, if you need care for any serious condition, you get second-rate service at the hospital if you don't have insurance.

It's not supposed to involve anything that would make a life-or-death difference, but it can.

In practical terms, what it comes down to is that a doctor is more likely to assume less and order tests more for someone who has insurance than for someone who doesn't.

Some of you people paying cash must live sheltered boring lives. I've probably had $300-$400,000 in medical bills if not more, with nothing hugely serious. Imagine what it would cost to have brain surgery or something like that.

There's nothing wrong with using cash to pay for minor, routine medical expenses. However, not many folks have several million laying around to cover the really serious stuff - and that's where some kinds of medical insurance make sense.

I was going to ask this same thing yesterday.

Mine is through my employer (family businsness). My share is $447/mo. But I needed to add my 1 YO on. Now through our current setup that meant I needed a family plan which was $1080 to add him on. I said that's a retarded amount of money for 2 people. So I put him on a individual plan for $97.48/mo. Same plan esentally just a touch higher co pay.

All this is through Wellmark BCBS.

Last time I checked the medical industry was focked and almost all but the basic services are not affordable by even middle class people.

To answer the OP's questoin I use my wife's insurance from her work cause its to damn expensive otherwise.

Spent a weekend in the hospital for what they thought was a heart problem. Saturday-Monday on telemetry, bland food and a treadmill test was $7K in 2004.

Had 2 surgical procedures on my right calf and heel, was supposed to be outpatient but ended up staying overnight, $21K plus followups and 8 weeks of home nurse visits.

Buddy of mine went down with pneumonia on his way back from Oshkosh, first went to VA who diverted him to a private hospital because their ICU was full. Spent 60 days in there before he passed away due to ARDS caused by a number of secondary bacterial infections traced back to the VA.

VA's trying to deny payment, leaving his wife with a $750,000 bill.

I just play rough. It started off in 1978 when I was two and my dad ran over my hand with the vacuum cleaner on mother's day and broke my finger and it's been all downhill from there. Since then I've broken several more fingers and toes, had 5 surgeries, spent 10 days in ICU, a few concussions and cracked my skull once, then there was the stint with the infection specialist, been sewed up a few times, bullet fragments in my face and right eye once, a bunch of other broken bones and one shoulder dislocation and some other stuff but you get the point......

Why so much, large family or just paying for the whole city?

Wife and I are both over 55.
I have had back surgeries, wife had a once-in-a-life-time cyst on her brain that required a-once-in-a-life-time surgery.
I am 6'1' and weigh 190 pounds, blood pressure is 117/78 and colesteral is 140, but I take a very small amount of BP medicine that the doc is going to take me off of.
I take a Crestor.
Wife takes a pill for her BP which is also in check.
Daughter (19) has had asthma and has Endometriosis.
Son (22) smokes but oddly enough they didn't care about that, LOL.

I reapplied to BCBS to find a way to lower it and was rejected for the above reasons, I am "grandfathered" in so I can keep my coverage, LOL.

Bottom line, 1) DO NOT GROW OLD and 2) DO NOT GET SICK, and you'll be fine!

We are looking for a way around it as this is simply way too much money but we are fucked. All you guys bitiching about you employer raising
your contributions had better take a moment to realize what you have and to realize that it may be comming to an end.

Health care is OUT OF CONTROL!

If you're willing to pay cash, it can be quite a bit more affordable.

My hospital offered me a 30 percent cash discount, and another 15 percent if I'd agree to pay before I was discharged. Naturally, they accept all major credit cards.

Nowadays, I use BCBS with a $10K deductible (costs around $200/month), and carry a credit card to cover the deductible, if needed.

Oxford, now part of United Healthcare. Cheap ass plan but it covers the big things 100%.
