Not looking for something to play video games, but want it to be fast and hold up for a while.

And something I can buy at one of the big stores, not really interested in ordering something from some smaller company.

You could get one of the 13" mac book pros for a little over that,

But i like ASUS and Gateway Laptops both sold at Best Buy, just don't fall for any of BB bull shit about using the geek squad for anything.

EDIT: make sure you get at least 4GB RAM but more 1k you should be seeing them with 6GB

EDIT: you will get better performance out of the 1k Windows PC compared to a Mac/Apple branded PC

Since no macs defiantly look at ASUS and Gateway for laptops stay far far away from HP/Acer laptops.

Will be going to BB Tomorrow to see what they have for laptops myself.

I've got an Asus gaming laptop last year - I forget which model. Some of the best hardware I've ever used. I love it. Battery life is shit, but it's not supposed to be a netbook. At work I have a Dell Precision portable workstation. It's been rock solid for four years of cad and structural analysis software, but I'm sure it cost more than $1K at the time. The only reason I've had to upgrade it is because Autocad 2011 is the epitome of bloatware.

The best made laptops (maybe not the best performing) are Lenovo's business line.  Dell's business laptops are decent too, but their consumer models are shit.

This is 100% true, but I think only Staples has them sometimes, bet to order one direct from lenovo ThinkPad say away from the idealpad line.

I picked up an Asus G60 from bestbuy right before xmas last year, and for the money it was far and above anything else anywhere close to the pricerange.  4gb ram, GTX 260m video card (2nd best on market at the time), big harddrive, windows 7, 16" screen, zippy core2duo processor, and it was $890 or so before tax.

If you want to do *any* sort of gaming at all, shop by video card.  I believe that notebookreviews.com keeps a ranking of all laptop video cards, shoot for something in the 10-30 ranking for the best bang for you buck.

Look for a dell outlet coupon, I just picked up a 13.3" compact laptop with core i5-540m processor, 4gb ram, and a 256gb SSD (plus fingerprint reader, wireless-n, bluetooth, 8x dvd-rw, windows 7 professional) for $770 (regular non-outlet price without coupon for identical spec (inspiron e4310) is $2500 ).

ETA: the coupon I used may still be valid -

25% off any Dell Outlet Latitude laptop! Enter coupon code 1P766S17CDCJC9 at checkout at http://del.ly/6019Es1 – expires 9/8 - Online only.

Whatever you do don't buy a piece of crap Dell laptop. I've had nothing but problems, even bought the warranty which they would not honor. I'd say Asus.

Almost every piece of Asus hardware I've owned has expired shortly after the warranty did. I've owned a ton of dells and only one had major problems, in that instance Dell replaced the 17" screen for free even though it was out of warranty. YMMV

Lenovo. It's a rebranded IBM laptop.

Toshiba. I had one from work but it was heavy.

Panasonic Toughbook is way expensive for what you want.

Apple hardware is pretty darn good. You can put windows on it and never even see the Mac OS.

I realize you said no on boutique systems. But the above is pretty uber all things considered.

Otherwise, I am on the Asus or Lenovo train with everyone else.

Good machine, big and heavy, but also solid and reliable.

Both of those systems are pretty suck in the memory department, especially at that price point.

What about something like this:

or if you don't want a 17"
