We still include matches in almost every nation's MRE's but no cigarettes?  Lame.

Hell, I'd like to try some of those.

I've eaten quite a few MREs (the real ones, from the Marine Corps) and the ONLY one I found awful was the vegetable patty meal

I think they're designed to weed out the vegetarians in the military by killing them slowly.

And I even LIKE veggie burgers (the civilian ones)

Interesting, only one country that had anything for dental care, and only one country with a multivitamin.

Hmm...I want to buy some of the Italian MREs.
Tortellini in my MRE
ETA: the poster above me is talking about the Italian MREs having dental care, multivitamins and fiber tablets.

According to MRE Info.com they also issue little airplane bottles of liquor

Great web page.  Really goes to show how the militaries of the world have put some effort into giving their soldiers something better than a can of beans and a spoon.

I thought it was amusing that the Australians get vegemite.  Ever had vegemite?    Australians apparently like it, though!

Australia's has Vegemite AND "Musk-flavored Candy."

So does Sweden's.  Cod stew.

Seriously - if I came from a place where cod stew was a mainstay on the menu, I'd be looking for something different in my damn field rations!

It's actually quite tasty.

There are far worse meals. Especially the older ones that came in cans. Those meals were nasty.

The similarities are surprising.  By looks I would rank the french as the tasties, and the australian as the most bountiful.

A little off-topic, but you started it:

Back during Vietnam I was with the Royal Australian Air Force in Penang, Malaysia for a short time. In the NCO Mess we had china plates, silver silverware, crystal glasses, linen tablecloths and a houseboy in a starched white jacket who held the menu while you made your selection from the choices offered. There was also a wine selection. I was impressed until I got drunk and they took all my money at darts.

Our wardrooms are just like restaurants... the food is very good and you have to pay for it.  The surf and turf was always first class to me.

The Italian NCO mess was as nice as a officer's mess on a US carrier. Food-wise the Italians win.

BTW the Spanish have full-service bars for their senior NCO's.

Tried a french one and thought it was horrible.  Fancy food just doesn't travel as well as simple stuff.

When you look at quantity you need to consider the scale of issue as well.  The Brits and Australians tend to issue a 24hr pack so what you see is a full day's food.  The Canadian and US rations are individual meals.  I had a fun time trying to explain to a Brit Sgt Maj in Kandahar that the rations we gave them were supposed to be three per man per day.

The "whole fiber tablets" in the Italian meal sound pretty handy.

Leave it to America to pair a tortilla, a BBQ pork rib, and potato soup.

Perhaps I am just a weirdo, but I have fond memories of the 24 hour packs from my Cadet days.

Burgers+Beans or Sausage+Beans NOM NOM NOM eat that shit cold or hot with my spoon
Lancashire fecking Hot pot
Chocolate cake or Treacle pudding (I swear this one is sweeter than honey soaked sugar-crack-meth flakes)
Biscuit Fruits and Biscuit Browns to either shit, or not shit.
Fucking BOILED SWEETS LADDY!

Super-Blando white and red/blue wrapper chocolate that somehow tastes as good as Lindt after a few days of ponging and monging in the rain.

Good enough for bloody Royalty!
