The HUD is a separate unit. NO fighter integrates the HUD into the canopy.

HUDs are either a separate display in front of the canopy or are now being integrated into helmet displays.

Quite a few WWII fighters used the armor glass pane as the collimator plane for a reflex sight (which was basically the HUD back then). EDIT: on second thought, I'm almost positive at least one modern or Gen 3 fighter used the front canopy pane as a HUD collimator... Now I have to wrack my brain for which one. |

I say it's reflected from the cockpit upwards and it *looks* like it's coming from the canopy in front of you, just like in some older GM cars that reflected the speedo. Any pilots out there that can settle ? thanks! My Vette has a projector in the dash that projects the display onto the windshield. Fighters have a similar projector but use a separate piece of glass as the screen. |
