South Sacramento grass arsons suspect arrested
SACRAMENTO, CA - Sacramento Metro Fire and Sacramento County sheriff's deputies took a man into custody Monday morning on suspicion of setting two fires.
Firefighters responded to a vacant field on fire at approximately 8:30 a.m. Monday, Assistant Fire Chief Brian Rice said.. Then a short time later, there was another call for a grass fire that had spread into trees and a power line at Power Inn Road and Florin Road.
Rice said witnesses to both blazes reported what they saw to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department. The two agencies investigated and took Edward Martin into custody on two counts of arson. Martin, 47, was believed to be a transient.
Investigators say they were looking into other arsons in the area to see if Martin had a role, but believe Monday's fires were the only ones he intentionally set.
Rice said Martin was not suspected in a series of arsons last week in North Highlands and Carmichael.
