They do. These dots are the tracks that the ships were taking while taking readings. The wide-open areas were estimated using photogrammetry, probably.

It likely has something to do with how the image was created. The other areas of ocean have more detail but I still see some of the same patterns. My swag is that the patterns are more visible in the area of the Barents because there is less detail in that area to obscure them.
