Windows always defaulted top left and down from there, so it's what I am used to.

Poll fail....I dont have a single icon on my screen...not on any computer I use (home or work)
A few key things in the tray (shortcut bar)....thats it. I cant stand clutter on my screen......no icons......ever. |

Icons for Programs and Files are on the lefts side. I only keep a few shortcuts though. In the middle at the top I keep rotating items I am currently working on and want easy access to. When I'm done with them I move them to my Work Files.

Although most of my icons are down the left side (and that's the choice I picked in the poll). I do have two of my most used icons at the top middle.
