...so I am looking for yet another flattop 16 inch carbine in our beloved 5.56, but what's the BEST VALUE out there these days? (I'm retired=fixed income)

Criteria: plain-jane vanilla (I can dress it up later)

Use: paper-punching and home defense at 300 yards: 4 and 2 legged varmints

1. NEW or USED?

2. BRAND? Bushie, Oly, Stag, Rock River, DPMS, Cobb, Rem, S&W, Colt, LMT, Wilson Combat. ...the list goes on OR

3. Build one up myself since I have the time and dexterity?

...inquiring mind wants to know..

I GOTS TO KNOW!

Thanks!

Del-Ton is good for plinking/training––I'm upfitting a DTI upper with a BCM BCG and bbl eventually. If you want to buy and cry once-go with BCM

BCM provides the best value for the money, unless what you really meant to ask was "what's the cheapest," in which case I would say get a BCM anyway.

I built a Delton for about $600.

I am not an "operator", but it serves my purposes just fine with a few K downrange.

This was during the "panic" when you could not get one anywhere for under $1500.

With $60 lowers falling off of trees thesedays......

Mine is BCM on the top and LMT on the bottom though.

That $400 DPMS kit is quite the deal for a plinker.  As long as you don't mind assembling and upper.

CDNN has S&W M&P-15's for $599.

Pretty good deal and then there is Spikes, Del-Ton, BCM.

IMO I'd get a Spikes - pretty much the best bang for the buck IMO.

I like the Armalite deal of $450 complete uppers. Grab a stock and lower from the EE and you're all set.

Yeah, I can see how my statement might have been confusing.

My Lower is an LMT w/  2 stg. trigger and LMT Sopmod Stock.  I added a Magpul triggerguard.

My upper is an earlier unmarked BCM 20" govt. profile 1:7 twist with DD Omega 12.0 rail and Troy Folding Rear Site.

I also have a Gear Sector GS2P sling and an assortment of 20 and 30 rd pmags.

BCM is currently having a sale on their uppers.  $385 will get you a BCM 16" upper sans handguards, charging handle and bolt carrier group.

Add another $130 for a BCM full auto BCG and charging handle and that gets you to $515 for the upper, which lacks only handguards.  I would spend the extra dough on a Magpul MOE handguard set from AIM Surplus ($35 shipped).  That brings you to $550 for a top-notch complete upper.

Throw your preferred brand of lower receiver, lower parts kit and stock on it and you're good to go.  If I was doing it on a budget I would go for a Stag lower and CMMG lower parts kit.  I prefer RRA lower parts kits for my builds but they are a bit more expensive.

You can get a Noveske mid length upper (light recce basic) for $850 and they'll throw in a stripped lower for free right now. Then just build the lower.
