Steel FTW. Especially LIM launched... that acceleration just can't be beat.
I genuinely don't like wood... beats the hell out of me. I've only ridden this one once since the line has always been a cluster fuck, but is the closest thing to flying without being in an aircraft that I've experienced. Have to say it's my favorite.  |

Metal. I like the one at Primm Nevada but it's been probably 7 or 8 years since I've ridden it. Not sure if it is even there any longer.

That's what I thought this thread was gonna be about - Mine are granite with cork anti scratch bottoms.

I'm 6'6" and a little over 300lbs, I don't fit well in most coasters. My kneecaps press right up against the front of the car which causes my thighs to sit high which usually makes the restraint bar a really tight fit. Add that all up with how a wooden roller coaster throws you around, and its very painful for me. I prefer steel.

We got season passes to King's Island this year. My favorites are The Beast and the Diamondback.
I used to prefer wood but now steel coasters are being made that make even the Vortex seem pedestrian. They tried to make a giant coaster in wood with the Son of Beast, but it may not run again.

I used to love the Cyclone at Riverside in Mass. Grew up maybe 2 miles away. We'd get seasons passes and ride our bikes there in the summer.
Very rough compared to the metal coasters, but it had a certain charm to it. They've got all kinds of crazy metal coasters there now that it's Six Flags, but the Cyclone is still there. Any metal coaster, the wilder the better. I even suffer from motion sickness and will take Bonine so I can ride all day. That being said, I hate wood coasters. The last one I rode shook me around so much my vision looked like a shaky camera. Being beaten to death is not my idea of fun.

Wood roller coasters can't be beat. When I lived in Indianapolis there was a park called Riverside that had some nice wood structured coasters. They were fun as hell to a '70's teenager.
Some of the new steel framed ones are pretty fun. Opryland had a nice called the Hangman that was a blast! I could ride it all day long. |
