I like the Grand Theft Auto series. It is not a military game per se but the gameplay revolves around killing things and stealing stuff.

Shit I cann't remember any good FPS's for the last gen consoles
MGS3 was pretty good.

God of War 1/2 (not FPS, but AWESOME games)
Killzone Metal Gear Solid 2 (again...not FPS, but one of the best console video games of all time) Socom Resident Evil 4 |

Since many ARFCOMers seem to love Red Dawn, they would probably enjoy Freedom Fighters.
 MGS2 and MGS3 are must-haves too.   |

The Metal Gear Solid games are awesome.
  As are the Ace Combat games.   |

If you do go for this, get Grand Theft Auto 3. I had medal of honor frontile and Rising Sun. Rising Sun was kinda cool because you could set up multiplayer with multiple AI bots. |

Everything seem original and new and exciting (because it was). If he likes that, I'm sure he'll move on the others.  Its harder to try to go back and then start missing your jetpack. |
