They call for 400 rds of ammo. Thinking about taking BamaJr, 10/22 a good choice for him? 14 yrs old. Not sure I want to invest 400 rds of 5.56 for him to shoot.

How old is Bama, Jr.? and what has he shot in the past?

If he can handle a .223, then by all means...if not then a 10/22 is the ideal choice....

Started my kids off early, when they went to their first Appleseed, they both shot my M1 Garand....but they had been shooting it for 6 years prior...

you have lost your mind...wolf match target is awesome ammo..way better than any of the agila I have shot...can shoot zip ties at 50 yards w/ ease w/ my 10/22 and wolf match...that stuff is the shit!

I agree with the sling. They sold me one when I was there ($12) since I just had the one from my M16.

I agree with the sling. They sold me one when I was there ($12) since I just had the one from my M16.

Very true about the sling...I had my Vtac...not the best sling for what we were doing...my GF had to use a leather sling...but neither were set up(nor at the time did I know how to use the leather sling) to really do what a USGI web sling would.

10/22 will be fine. My Appleseed was all 25m.

The whole idea of Appleseed is to teach marksman proficiency with rack grade rifles and ordinary ammunition. Nothing special is needed. With that said, you will have the best chances for success with a rifle that has adjustable sights, a sling, and removable magazines.

In true Arfcom fashion, bring both. Start with the .22 and go from from there. I would also bring more than 400 rounds.

I did my first Appleseed last spring, and I purchased a 10/22 just for the occasion. It's a great little weapon and is a useful addition to the collection anyway. It's also a great training tool, and all the Appleseed stuff is set up for those 10 round magazines.

When I go do another Appleseed, I plan to take the AR-15.

..and yes, I did get my patch.

10/22 for the 25 yard stuff (majority)

AR in case they use the 400 yard range (Steel City?). He will get experience in adjusting his sights for distance.

He has an SP1 carbine. He has been shooting since he was 7.

Just thinking for his first training event to go with something less expensive to shoot.

He wants to be an Army sniper when he grows up. This has been his dream since a little boy.

Some points I would add:

A sling is essential, absolutely essential, it is a sizeable portion of what they teach. It also helps.

Adjustable sights are also a must. Having to bust out the drift punch to fix your sights sucks.

Lubrication is also essential, bring some of whatever you use and plan to lube and re-lube 3-4 times a day. I like the small cans of rem-oil, but YMMV.

If your going to do both days, I'd say 22 for the first day, SP1 the next.

I went to an Appleseed in October 2008 and got my Rifleman patch using a borrowed 10/22 in "Liberty Rifle" configuration, and CCI Mini Mag ammo. My SO did the same, using my 10/22 with a BSA Sweet 22 scope and the same ammo.

Match ammo is not at all necessary, and a big waste of money. You're only shooting at 25 yards, so plain old regular .22 LR is just fine.

Likewise regarding 5.56. Save the real rifle cartridge for actual long range shooting.

wont make an iota of difference at 25 yards, i played with some expensive stuff near the end of the day, the most important thing by far is ammo that is coated to feed reliably thats bout it

bama dont waste the ammo on your boy if your not gonna be punching out to 400 and just shooting the 25m adjust instead, it really is a waste, plus itll make the day less enjoyable overall once the cool factor wears off and hes starts gettin a sore shoulder and burned hands etc.
As for what to bring, gi sling, somethign that goes bang. I did my first one with a bolt action .22 and irons, gave my colt to a first time shooter. the next one im bringing my uzi and then letting my buddy shoot the nm m1A.

it has nothing to do with being cheap, if your shooting for two days, especially sunday your gonna put a lot of lead downrange, the event is focused strictly around classic 3 position supported marksmanship, save the 5.56 for something that will be at least a remotely good use of the 5.56, either distance, or loading drils/ failure drills, shooting on the move whatever.

25 yards static shooting with single mags pre loaded mags is a waste of money, .22 is fine for what the class teaches, sight picture, npoa, resp. pause., sling use, etc.

best idea is just bring both, shoot .22 day one and .223 later on if you want.

Appleseed encourages bringing a 10/22. That's what I took. It's simple, ammo is cheap and makes you focus on the fundamentals rather than the 15 pounds of gadgets on your AR.

One little nugget of wisdom I learned at my Appleseed: If you're shooting an AR with rails, get rail covers. The web between the thumb and forefinger of my left hand was chewed up pretty well after 2 days of shooting with uncovered rails.

Nope. There were a few bolt guns at my shoot. I'm seriously thinking about bringing my US Rifle Model of 1917 next time I go. I might not shoot it exclusively, but I'd like to at least do a half day with it.

This with any reliable ammo in the gun. Gotta have a sling too. At 25M, it should shoot fine. That is the point of Appleseed's marksmanship training.

If your gonna get an AR with a 22 conversion, make sure your ammo is minute of soda can at 25 yards. Those 1/7 barrels don't work so well with .22 ammo.

The weather has cooled off some, but if it's going to heat up bring something to cover any black rifle when you go down range. I went to one in mid summer once and when we came back to the line from scoring targets you could barely pick your rifle up.

Natch, plenty of H2O and sunscreen. I like the spray on kind with a couple of poker chips to protect my eyes when I apply it.
Plugs and muffs in case you're next to someone with a Garand. If you have a spare stapler it's a big help with the targets if you can bring one.

I went to one a couple weekends ago. I'd recommend a 10/22 (or similar), 2 10 round mags, GI sling and at least 600 rounds of ammo. I took 500 and came home with 35, and set out 2 rounds of shooting.

Hat, glasses, shooting mat and plenty of water. Have fun and good luck.

Appleseeds can be very fun. I have been to two and still I am only a cook

. My 10/22 shoots like crap accuracy wise. The 10/22 is reliable and I think I am doing my part. My 10/22 just will not group better that 1 1/2 inches at 25yards. I plan to test various brands of ammo to see which one shots the best. My LTR still has a factory barrel. I think everyone should have to shoot irons first before going to a scope. That is unless you have an eye issue requiring the use of an optic.

Is your rifle new? Mine took a couple hundred rounds before it started getting really tight groups.

ETA: I guess after 2 applseeds you have at least 1k down range, so maybe that's not it.

I used a 10/22 Liberty Rifle config and got my patch on my first shoot. It still had the 27lb factory trigger too and I have put 15K + rounds through it. Strat81 and my wife were both horrified just how awful the trigger is.

I would have cried if I shot 600rds of 223 at 25m.

There was a appleseed pretty close to here not too long ago, I didn't go because I had no idea what it was, so what did I miss?

Also what are the benifeits to a sling? I have one but I read lots of guys saying they shoot with a sling, I just thought you used em for carrying the rifle around.

The sling, when looped around your upper arm, acts like a third hand. It turned out to be pretty impressive how helpful it can be.

The LTR (liberty training rifle) is a semi auto .22 (yes the 10/22 was the first one used extensively but there's a growing number of Marlin 795's showing up as Tech Sights is making sights for them now, too) with box magazines and the ability ot use it with a GI web sling.

The AQT (used at Appleseeds) dates back to the M1903 and M1917. Each stage is 10 rounds, each stage is timed, stage one is standing (off hand at a target sized to simulate a 100 yd. distance), stage 2 is sitting (starting from standing with a reload required, at two targets sized to simulate a 200 yd. distance), stage 3 is prone (starting from standing with a reload required, at three targets sized to simulate a 300 yd. distance) and stage 4 is also prone (started from prone, at 4 targets sized to simulate a 400 yd distance).

A .22 is good for day 1. If the range where the Appleseed you're attending has distance past 100 yds. available then the folks shooting better groups are usually taken over to that range on the afternoon of day 2 to allow them to shoot longer diatances (nothing like shooting at the real distance to prove the techniques taught and practiced at 25 meters really do work). Find out if your Appleseed will have the longer ranges available and take a centerfire rifle for Sunday afternoon.

I ordered two Marlin 795's and two sets of tech sights last year for one but couldn't make it because of work. Still planning on going whenever the schedule is worked out. Sounds like fun.

Good memory! Yes, Bama - be sure you locktite the front sight in place. I was chasing rainbows the first day, and at the end of the day figured out that my front sight was wobbling all over the place. Rookie mistake.

I used my AR the second day. Still didn't get the patch. I blame it on being old and fat. (I still plan on getting the patch with iron sights...)
