SOUTHWEST SIDE -- A 4-year-old boy was fatally shot in the head Tuesday evening by a man who fired through a porch window after quarreling moments earlier with occupants of a Brighton Park apartment, police said.

Enrique Mendujano of the 4700 block of South Paulina Street was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the medical examiner's office.

Witnesses told police the assailant was a resident of the second floor of the building in the 2900 block of West 38th Street. The man was being sought by police late Tuesday and was believed to be driving a 1986 Buick with license number F266 686.

The man may still be carrying the 12-gauge shotgun that was used in the shooting, and police advise anyone who sees the car to call 911.

Chicago police spokesman Pat Camden said Tuesday evening that three men had been drinking all day. The suspect became involved in a conflict with two people who live on the first floor of the building. Shortly before 7 p.m., the man went upstairs to his apartment to get the shotgun.

"He went downstairs and attempted to kick in the [first-floor apartment] front door. He failed to do that, so he went to the back door and shot through the window, striking the 4-year-old," Camden said.
