GENERAL: In accordance with the substance of my letter to you of the 8th instant, I propose to receive the surrender of the army of Northern Virginia on the following terms, to wit: Rolls of all the officers and men to be made in duplicate, one copy to be given to an officer to be designated by me, the other to be retained by such officer or officers as you may designate. The officers to give their individual paroles not to take up arms against the government of the United States until properly exchanged; and each company or regimental commander to sign a like parole for the men of their commands. The arms, artillery, and public property to be parked and stacked, and turned over to the officers appointed by me to receive them. This will not embrace the side-arms of the officers nor their private horses or baggage. This done, each officer and man will be allowed to return to his home, not to be disturbed by United States authority so long as they observe their paroles and the laws in force where they may reside. ~ U. GENERAL: I received your letter of this date containing the terms of the surrender of the army of Northern Virginia, as proposed by you. Thank you, MacAllan.  I haven't read either of those letters in several years, and I am pleased to see that there are those among us who remember the Honour that once was, here in the United States.  How the mighty have fallen...

I thought you were going to talk about Sarah Brady's birthday.

I'm sorry that I have to run off to court so soon this morning.

There was a final meeting of Gen. Lee with his officers and aides, when he informed them that he was prepared to send a note to Grant seeking terms for the surrender of his army.

Some of the officers became agitated with this news, and one of them, I believe his last name was Anderson, replied to the General that, the army should be disbursed and the men scattered in all directions 'like rabbits into the woods' to continue the fight.

General Lee looked at his young officer with the look that a father might give his son, and softly, but authoritatively, told him that, no, they were responsible for the conduct of their men, and that further horrors would be needlessly visited upon the citizens of both sides should such an action be taken.

The officer said that, immediately, he realized the foolhardiness of his statement and wished with all his might that he could have taken it back.

That, ladies and gentlemen, was Gen. Robert E. Lee! Whom G. K. Chesterton once referred to as the 'last of the Heroes.'

BTT - last time around for the day crew.

A dark day in the history of free men.  It set the stage for abuse by the Federal government for the next 140 years.

My great great great Grandfather was there with the surrender.  He was part of a Florida unit drafted to help defend Richmond. He was in the Battle of Cold Harbor.

After the surrender he walked from Virginia back to Central Florida.  It took him six months.
