I work in a bad part of a mostly bad city. We get suspicious vehicles and persons weekly.

I just had someone circle the parking lot a couple of times then throw something at the building.
I haven't ever called unless one of the drivers/workers is actually robbed outside. Which has happened.

Do you guys call in suspicious activity or wait until you see actual crime?
Note: the company refuses to put up No Trespassing signs. So there's not much police can do unless a crime has taken place.

I've called the Police exactly once. Some fuck knuckle was drinking and driving, and almost ran into my car. He was weaving all over the road like a bastard. Got in behind him and called 5-0. Gotcha bitch.

I'm probably not going to call without seeing a crime.

It depends on circumstances though, if its really suspicious like a masked man with a shotgun sitting in a car outside a gas station I'm going to call.

Normal looking guy loitering where he may not belong probably not. Too many reasonable possibilities to be worth calling over.

Before we moved, our old house got broken into two or three times (I don't remember, I was only nine or so at the time). Called for that.

We used to call all the time for our paranoid schizophrenic neighbor, either due to the volume/length of his sessions where he'd scream all kinds of obscenities at trees or the black people behind us, threaten to kill us for the time our two dogs got out and killed his cat (which he had left tied to a tree), etc. He got baker acted once or twice, but otherwise nothing came of that.

Had a guy try to kick down our front door at about 12:45am two years ago. Called for that, after searching the immediate area around our house (front, back, and side yard) myself. I hoped they'd find him walking down the road or something, but no dice.

When I got shot, we called for cops and EMS.

Other than those occasions... never that I can remember.

OP, what was thrown at the side of your building? Just curious, as drug dealers have been known to "drop off" their goods in unorthodox ways such as what you described. Perhaps it is safe to take a look?

If you feel insecure or uncomfortable with the vehicle, call the police. Give them an accurate description of the car, occupants, a tag number (if possible), and direction of travel. Who knows, the cops might stop the car and get lucky!

A guy tried to run me over once after I went to see if he was alright after driving into the woods on my road. Ran like hell up my driveway and called 911. Took the cops over 25 minutes to get out there.

We also had someone drop a 27" tube TV in our driveway, and not just at the end, they drove up a bit. We didn't call the emergency line, but we didn't want to have to pay the $35 disposal fee at the dump, so we had the town come and pick up the TV.

I did come EXTREMELY close once, and probably should have - I was behind a very obviously intoxicated driver for a few miles, but then he pulled off.

I'll call the cops almost at the drop of a hat. I know for a fact they have almost nothing else to do. And here they encourage people to report suspicious stuff.

I've called the police after spotting some fresh graffitti tagging. They want us to, and I'm happy to do so.

I've also called up the dispatch for other things that happened as I observed. Such as an attempted break-in to a trailer.

Not 911 necessarily but the police just the same.

Kind of like the 'broken windows' thing in NYC. Jaywalkers, I don't care about. Idiots who demonstrate that they don't give a fuck about other folk's stuff are asking for it, though. And I think it's better that they get caught in the act.

Here in LiberalDouche PropertyTax land, we don't get cops to come fill out reports....we're s00per progressive and hi-tek...we fill out police reports online...they won't even come to the scene of an accident unless someone is dead. It's beyond ridiculous.

Portland fucking sucks...but yeah, calling a cop to get a police report is like calling a Democrat and asking them to quit spending my money.

You fill out your comments, some pencil pusher does a "report", and in as little as 3 months, you get some shit in the mail you can use for your insurance claim.

I don't call for "issues" unless I think I'm going to need to curb liability. I have called many times for odds and ends - an older man was locked out of his car, trying to get in with a coat hanger in the rain, for instance. I was in a hurry, but I live in a small town, and gave the police a call and they went and got him into his car.

In my several dealings where I called the cops, 3 things have happened:

1) My car was broken into, no investigation.
2) I was sucker punched in the face, KOed, then charged with assault when the other guy lied and said I hit first.
3) After being Medevaced out of Iraq, a civilian nurse working in an army hospital stole a prepaid credit card while I was doped up on pain meds. After making a few calls, I found where it was used, who used it, and when. I reported this to the police. 6 months later, no charges and the bitch still had her job.

I will never call the police again. If there is a crime happening around me, I will either ignore it, or stop it, but I will not report it.

I've only called for 2 accidents (wanted reports saying my car was hit). And once because some guy almost ran into me head on, and he was driving basically after dark with his lights off.

When somebody is about to get killed or significant property damage is about to take place, and it isn't providing me with teh lolz...

Sometimes, if it is providing me with teh lolz, I call the cops anyway, so they can enjoy watching teh lolz with me.

I called once when a domestic was going on a few houses away. I was pretty much ignoreing the screaming, yelling
and general loud noises until there was a banging noise and a child started screaming LOUD. Ok..If the stupid bitch
wants to hang out and get beaten, that's her business, but when a child gets involved, that's a whole nother story.

The other time was when a car came barrelling at me from down the side of a high shoulder. Shocked the hell out of me but
I got the plate. The vehicle wrecked into a telephone pole a number of miles down the road. I noticed it and gave a statement
to the police regarding it, and informed them I made the 9/11 call. Turned out the driver was stoned out of her mind.

Other than that, I don't remember calling the cops in about 20 years.

depends. if the fool is close to home, get the police report first. then file a complaint with no trespass.then OP.... after that its all down hill. id rather do it the old fashoned way and beat the frickin tar outta a dumfuck, but the law dont say thats just fine. go figure.

I have heard gunshots from time to time... And trust me, they were gunshots (when there is no acoustic insulation between you and the gun, and it's within 200 yards pistol/500 yards rifle, it's easy to tell)... I usually call when I hear these, not because I feel the need for cops to get involved (don't give a shit about that), but because where there are gunshots, sometimes there are bleeding people who need ambulances right now... The earlier first responders show up, the better.

One of the times I called, I heard a string of seven rapid shots, followed a few seconds later by an eighth (about the time I was calling)... Was definitely a service-cartridge handgun, not some wimpy pistol, nor a rifle or shotgun... Close, too, was probably within a hundred yards. I told the dispatch as much. Then went about my business. Saw the news the next day... Some dude got murderlized one street over from where I was... Shot three times in the chest, a few times in the limbs, and then finished off with an almost-muzzle shot to the skull after he was already on the ground... Holy shit.

Called 'em once to inform them about an accident that had *just* happened (i.e. I saw it). Didn't tell them I was a witness or anything, but figured that since the two drivers were wandering around the middle of the intersection, that cops might help them from getting killed.

Got transferred around between departments as it was "not our jurisdiction." Took about 7 minutes to get to a dispatcher, but damn the cop was there in a hurry afterwards.

My family has called for prowlers before. Also when someone took a shot at the house.

These days though, suspecting a prowler means two people go outside with Maglites and concealed .45s. We'll only call the police if there's a real threat.

I can only think of 2 times where I've called the police.

Once I called them when someone was cruising very slowly down the street at about midnight with their lights off. Nobody who does that is up to very much good.

Once I called them because I got woke up at about 3am to the sound of a neighbor's sliding glass door being smashed open. It ended up being an empty unit that had been for sale for a while, but still, pretty ballsy to smash a glass door at 3am. It made tons of noise. And then they were walking on the glass, which made more noise...

I would possibly call for "suspicious activity" but I'm not sure what I'd consider suspicious. I guess, like porn, it's hard to define but I'd know it if I saw it.

I have called the police maybe 2 times.

1) Driving to pick up my dinner and this drugged/drunk was driving 55mph down the wrong side of the road almost hit 5 other cars including mind. It was mid winter and the roads were slush. I got behind her and was on the phone with the police the whole way until she crashed into a ditch. She was fucking whacked out of her mind. When the cop went over to her car which was now at a 45 degree angle she put the car in reverse and tried to back out, even though she was in about 1.5 feet of snow. I laughed and I am glad no one got hurt but her.

2) driving back to my house on a highway and some kids swerved in front of another car flipped them off and threw pop cans out the window at the other car. I watch the whole thing happen. It was a couple of punk kids causing trouble. It just so happened a trooper was in the area and pulled there asses over. The cop called me after he pulled them over, he said he had some fun with them but didn't write tickets because he got an accident call and had to respond. I just didn't want these tards to cause an accident and hurt someone.

House alarm went off around 2AM after the garage access door was kicked in. Had the cops come out to check, but the alarm pretty much sent them running. Unless somebody is about to get killed or beat half-to-death/property damage that is not likely to be prosecuted unless I call I don't really have any reason to call the cops.

I don't have people coming for me and I don't drive around town with drugs in my car. So my interactions with LE are either as a complainant or casual.

First time I called the Sheriff's Department, or rather THREE Sheriff's Departments, because I lived very close to the dividing line of three counties, all three said they wouldn't come out because I wasn't in their jurisdiction, that I was in one of the other two jurisdictions. Call them, not us, they all said. The next day I bought a Mini-14 with a folding stock and 40 round mag. I also called all three SO's and asked that the next time they had someone in my area to please drop off some body bags, that for now on I would take care of business myself and just call them for pickup service. We had a, uh, discussion and I said, "Why do you give a damn? I'm not in your jurisdiction."

That was 30 years ago. That was the event that got me involved with self defense rather than hunting firearms. That Mini-14 led to a few more, and then to AR-15's a few years later.

I've called the SO only two other times (other than reporting accidents), one for an attempted break in through my daughters' bedroom window. And the other was earlier this year when I received death threats. "I'm gonna kill you and your whole family," the person said. The only reason I called the SO was because I lived in another area with good Deputies I know personally. In this jurisdiction I happen to have a number of deputy friends, shooting buddies, who I knew would actually get me some help if needed. And I wanted the calls traced.

Three times in my life...

1. 2 girls kicking the crap out of eachother.... I watched for a bit while they argued, then called after they started throwing punches.

2 & 3: Suspicious persons too close for comfort, Police arrived within 2 min, and problem solved.

Unless I need to file a report for insurance, or I feel my safety is in danger and I would need some help, those are the only reasons I would call.
