COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. –– Deputies in Columbia County arrested a Starke man who they said tried to rob an S&S store thanks to the help of some nearby citizens.
Investigators said Chris Crew, 49, went into the store at Baya Avenue and Country Club Road about 11 p.m. Tuesday with a handgun and told the clerk to give him money from the cash register.
Deputies said the clerk immediately activated store security measures, and Crew tried to leave.
They said he was able to make his way through the locked front doors and attempted to run away from the business when three citizens heard the commotion and saw him trying to run away.
Deputies said the citizens chased him and were able to tackle him behind the business. Deputies said one of the citizens was able to pin the man on the ground until deputies could arrive.
Deputies said they recovered a small caliber handgun, and Crew was taken into custody. He is charged with robbery with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Crew was booked into the Columbia County Detention Facility without bond.
No one was injured during the attempted robbery, deputies said.
