Amazing stuff.
Is it actually useful in combat?

Its infrared. All it is showing is that jet exhaust, suprisingly enough, is very hot, and dissipates in the air behind the plane...

its not like anyone who owns a thermal camera has been banned from filming the plane ya know..

So just how stealthy can a fighter really be, if that's how wildly visible they appear on IR?

Maybe I'm missing something.  It's just airshow footage, right?  A little bit of it just happens to be infrared footage, something anyone can do if they want to.

You gotta get relatively close for that to come into play.

You won't get that close to an F-22.

IR seeker on a....nevermind.

How will it perform against current russian/chinese missiles?

I understand they'll have to be pretty close up to go all-aspect IR (it seems that only the rear aspect is hot enough for a seeker) however the russians are working on IR+Radar tracking.

Jeezus, it is airshow footage.  Normal everyday raptor fighting/flying does not involve close in airshow demos.......

Just thought that it's heat signature might either help foreign countries steal designs or develop missiles that could better hone in on the heat...

It was interesting seeing what parts were hot during non-burner flight. It turns into quite the little glowing fireball when the burners are on!

You guys are right! Now the bad guys will know which parts of the jet are the hot bits!

I understand that industrial espionage can happen anywhere, and small pieces add up to large pieces.

But it's a youtube video.  Plus, I bet is doesn't look that much different compared to a F4 under thermal.

Pretty cool video.  Any thermal radiation experts in here?

Need to compare that to a FLIR video of an F-15 to really see the difference.

You have any idea the amount of heat a turbine puts out?

Rest assured, your getting your money worth.

Some random comments:

1. who knows if this is genuine footage?  disinformation is prevalent

2. who knows if the aircraft is representative?  disinformation is prevalent

3. IR signatures are relative.  Relative to a. what a missile can detect b. what is visible to augmented observers and c. what the enemy aircraft presents.  Where in the tier  of visibility this fits is an important question.

Cool footage either way.   Burn a ton of fuel in 400 seconds, and something is going to get warm...(random guesses on the ton and 400 seconds thing but you get my drift)

Cool footage of an F22 through an IR CAMERA set to "white hot".

No radar involved in this video.

The air data probes and ECS steam vent were showing up as bright white; pretty neat.

At that distance, Helen Keller could find the aircraft.  Nonetheless, it's pretty cool footage.

Too bad you can't change the pallet, level, or span in the video. It would look better in iron too.

The idea is to come in hard and fast, hit them before they know you are there. You can't use a heat seeking missile if you don't know where the airplane is to get a lock in the first place. Even if they could reduce the IR signature to negligeable levels, there are missiles out there that use the plane blocking UV light against the sky to track and lock.
