so when i get to his house im like oh crap he did it. There in his hand sits a high point 380, i ask what he pays he sai 140. he bought the gun brand new at a pawn shop. i calmly explain to him he just bought a $140 turd, he got alittle upset set and starts going off saying how the guy told him it was one of the best guns on the market and that it has a lifetime warranty. so i told him that the lifetime warranty comes to it that if a SHTF sitiuation arose he wouldnt be alive to use it. What does the hive mind think and what are your opinions on Highpoint.

They go bang. All the ones I've shot had no issues.

No point in getting the .380 though, it's basically the same size as the 9mm compact. Huge.

I want to agree, but a friend of mine once bought a Hipoint .380 and we never could get off a magazine without multiple failure to feeds.

I shot one that jammed about every 4 rounds. When it did shoot it actually did shoot ok, but I wouldn't rely on it for anything

Instead of being totally upset with him. Why don't you try to show him and explain to him the differences in the quality of some firearms.

A little education goes a long way and the way you present it will alos go a long way.

For $140 he could have picked up a FEG PA-63, a gun that, despite it's rough finish, is made well and actually works.

I see people with HiPoints at the range, many seem to have feed issues. And the quality and strength of their parts would seriously concern me if I intended to shoot more than a couple of hundred rounds through it.

I have a 9mm, got a couple thousand round through it. Haven't cleaned it yet, haven't had to.

Pro- Cheap, stone reliable, accurate, barely warms up at all under rapid fire, kick-ass warranty service
Con- Heavy and large, lo-cap, hard to disassemble, trigger isn't Sigma-bad, or P3AT-bad, but it isn't good either

Buying one in 380 is stupid though, you embrace every possible disadvantage of the cartridge and the pistol. Expensive, hard to get, low powered ammo in lo-cap magazines in a huge gun? Poor call.

Meh..... I wouldn't go out of my way to buy a highpoint, that said..... my friend bought two of them, one in 9MM and one in .45, they were heavy, clunky and just plain felt shitty to handle but...... the damn things hit what i was shooting at and went bang every time.

I've shot 2 HiPoints. A .380 and a .40.

Though huge and kinda clunky, they were both accurate and I didn't have any function issues with the two or three mags I fired from them.

Wouldn't buy one, though.

I always tell people that are on a tight budget to get a Smith or even a taurus .38 snubby. For not much more money at all, he could have a nice used taurus .38 that goes bang every time, and is as accurate as you need for self defense.

It's a chunky pistol, but cheap. A friend wanted a handgun and I was showing her Glocks and XDs, which I thought would be a good first pistol that would fit her needs. She saw the Hipoint price tag and really wanted it. It was much cheaper than what I was recommending and it was her money, so home it went.

When I took her to the range for some training, she was putting every shot right in the center at 25 yards. She was a natural with that thing. I wasn't as good; I didn't like how it pointed. I gave her some instruction on working with malfunctions using snap caps, but the thing never jammed or had a FTF during live fire. Given how "sticky" both the slide and magazine felt, this surprised me.

I don't like the ergos of the thing and it's huge, but for the price I was impressed. Wish it could be field stripped easier since I like to thoroughly clean my guns after use.

I've had 2 380, 2 9mms, and 3 9mm Carbines from them and all of them ran without issue. Not the best designs or the prettiest but they generally have a good reliablity record. That being said I own 0 now. I had bought a 380 and 9mm when buds did the $99 shipped / $119 Shipped sale during the rush, one of the 380s was from a local pawn shop (for $69) and one of the 9mms from a individual on a local board with extra mags for $110. Carbines were $150 used, 1 in a trade (had roughly $100 in the trade), and 1 new for $215. We have a local "Bargain Trader" magazine and I tried to sale both the 380s and 1 of the Carbines. I probably had 50-75 calls the first week and the 380s where gone for $140/150 the first day, I sold the 9mms for $175 to all the people that kept calling. And after getting $250 for a carbine, I went ahead and sold the other two. I put a high price on them expecting lower offers. I ended up buying a Sig 2022 9mm/night sights for $399, 3 used Glock 22s ($1k), and a Keltec sub2000 $299 (that took glock mags) with part of the proceeds.

My friend has one. I tried to talk him out of it, but that $90 was burning a whole in his pocket. I was suprised when we went out to shoot it that it would actually fire.

He has had it several years now and it still goes bang every time you pull the trigger. Its big, clunky and ugly, but is functional.

I'm not denying some hi points function. But it's like the old M$ xbox 360 with a 97% failure rate from launch. Just because yours still works, doesn't mean the other 999,999,999 do.

The HiPoint hate is strong in here. I would surmise most of the hate comes from people with only second hand knowledge.

In my time behind the counter, I sold more HiPoints than anything else. Yes, they are ugly. They are clunky. They are bulky. You wont win

the gun snob beauty contest with one, that is for sure.

With that said, for someone who doesn't have much $$$, the HiPoints generally work just fine with quality ammo. If they don't, customer service from

HiPoint is second to none.

Let your friend enjoy his purchase. Go shooting with him, teach him the basics. see if the gun has any problems and if so, help him get it worked out.

That is what a shooting buddy does, not crap all over a guy for his "poor" choice in firearms.
