Was this a police respond-able act or did the victim have to use the website to report it?

Welcome to Oakland

Virginia computer engineer in the Bay Area for a job interview at Google Inc. was shot and killed in downtown Oakland by robbers who escaped with just $17, police said Monday.

Jinghong Kang, 45, of Fairfax, Va., a father of three sons, was shot near the corner of 19th and Webster streets at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, police said.

Kang had gotten his teeth cleaned earlier in the day and had returned to his rental car with a dental hygienist when he was shot, police said.

His dental appointment was in preparation for a job interview that had been scheduled for Monday at Google in Mountain View, police said. Investigators said Kang and the hygienist knew each other because they had been members of the same church.

She was helping Kang enter directions back to his hotel into the car's GPS system when two men approached them, police said. The men demanded money, and one of them shot Kang, police said. The hygienist was not hurt.

A woman who answered the phone Monday at Lake Merritt Dental, where Kang had his teeth cleaned, said no one was available to comment.

The assailants escaped. Police did not release a detailed description of them.

The motive appears to be "an attempted robbery gone bad," said Officer Jeff Thomason, a police spokesman. Kang handed over the $17 he had on him, police said, but the men shot him anyway.

Relatives said Kang, who worked at a Maryland computer firm, had wanted to land a job at Google because it was one of the best companies in the country. Had he gotten the job, his family would have moved with him to the Bay Area.

"We were saddened to hear the news," said Google spokesman Jordan Newman. "Our hearts go out to Jinghong Kang's family."

Kang's widow, Wendy Wang, said she and the couple's sons, ages 10, 12 and 17, were struggling to come to terms with his death.

"I just feel very angry," Wang said. "I think they need to stop doing this."

She said her husband liked to preach the Gospel and attend church.

He was a "good father and a good husband," Wang said. "He is the supporter of our family, and every one of us really relies on him. I feel very helpless. I'm not sure what to do."

11:30 at night is kind of late for having your teeth cleaned. Then hanging out in a darkened parking lot probably wasn't a good idea either.

Anyways, its very unfortunate that someone will shoot you after you've met their demands. Guess $17 didn't quite meet their expectations and  makes it worth killing for.

Crazy world....
