big barrels must be changed sometime.How much time and work is it?Are they changed under battle conditions and how often?

I'll have to ask my friend as he was an M109 driver. "Rick" has told me a story of racing another gun back to the motorpool. On the way, he went through a "small" ditch, stuffing the end of the tube into the far side, bending the barrel.
Can't remember how he explained that one to the CO, though
