that's all I can say but if you ain't gaming or doing other high end stuffs (editing videos etc) you don't really need much I'd consider getting a nettop if I just wanted a basic play on the inet computer Atom CPU and cheap |

Since buying the laptop I ma on, I have mothballed two towers. I cannot fathom using a tower now. Even a CHEAP laptop is =/> a top of the line laptop of last year. Hell, $500 bought me a 64 bit, 4gb RAM dual-core Pentium laptop. Why do I need a tower? Go for a laptop, man. That's my opinion, anyhow.

I like HP or Dell. ACERs are total shit IMO.
I have run all HP laptops and they have been great and run HP and Dell desktops at my business with a good success rate. I had ACERs previously and we have had 4 go out for various reasons

If all you want to do is watch some flash content and light internet browsing then you really can't buy a machine that will disappoint. If you're expected use is only that, buy the cheapest you can find and you'll be happy enough. $500 gets you a lot of computer these days.
The laptop/desktop split is a little muddy these days. The cheap desktops don't offer much more performance for the dollar over a laptop, and it's academic for normal web use. You'll get more harddrive space with a desktop, but does that matter to you? It comes down to how you want to use it- are you more comfortable at a desk or on the couch? I'd argue that, long term, the laptop will be a better buy. Even if you end up upgrading down the road, you can pretty easily keep another laptop running and useful. Keeping multiple towers in service gets a little difficult. Obviously you'll want to make sure that a laptop you look at has the correct type of disk burner. I think they all come with the typical DVD ROM formats, but stuff like Blu-Ray, light-scribe and DVD-RW formats may not be as common. |

Well I got a Emachines tower & decided to hold off on the monitor until I can afford a good one.
It's the ET1831-07 model & cost me about $350, but with $30 worth of taxes. 
It's a lot quieter than my old computer, but the monitor looks strange. I'm guessing it's due to most monitors being flatscreens these days. 
Has 4GB DDR2 memory & 750GB harddrive. |

I second the BIY thing as well. It seems for the requirements you have listed you can get away with very little money.
Toms BIY Guide PC building is like putting together legos - very easy. I would probably go with a flavor of linux as well - any of the Debian based ones are great for transitioning windows users. Transmission is a pretty good bit torrent client. Let us know if this is something you would like to pursue vs buying a PC from the store. Saves money

What's a torrent? If you are looking to download pr0n, you can install any video downloader plugin for your internet browser and just go to any free site. I wouldn't waste any time trying to get porn ) from limewire |

You can always put the laptop on a desk,get a mouse and keyboard and your all set.So if you want to take it with you ,it's no problem.You can add speakers a scanner and anything else you would want.

Oh, on the hulu thing, do you intend to hook up the PC to a HDTV?
- G Sorry cracked out - I didn't see that you already purchased the PC. Your resolution probably just needs to be adjusted for your monitor. 1) Right click in the center of the screen and go to "Screen resolution" and then adjust to something like... 1025 x 768 or 1280 x 1024. Additionally, Microsoft Security Essentials is an excellent virus scanner. Its light and free. Let us know if you need any additional assistance. |

Oh - another nice utility on a new pc is Ninite.
You just check all the boxes for the stuff you want to install and then download their installer. Then execute the file and sitback. It hits most of the important stuff. |

I picked up a HP Compaq laptop at OfficeDepot when they went on sale; seems to be working fine.
I did have to pick up a Student Microsoft Office or whatever they call it for a Word program; although I prefer the Word 2003 version better. I waited for the laptop mouse and Chillpad to go on sale also and bought them later. ymmv |

I used it for a long time with no troubles. Not only are you downloading blind and with no way to verify the contents of the file, but it leaves huge security holes open. Torrents tend to be more vetted by the community, and malicious ones don't last as long. Just google "torrents for noobs" or something like that. I find they're faster as well. |

A laptop would be portable, but I was under the impression that desktops were still better for some reason.
