i find myself thinking "how in hades did they do that?".

best part is the only thing that looks really damaged is the cannon. otherwise it looks to be sound and functional.

They were obviously maneuvering to take a shot at something close in on the ground in front of them. [rolleyes]

Israelis build a pretty nasty MBT! Not the fastest tank on the block. I think the 120mm smooth bore is going to need a new barrel!

All,

This sort of stuff happens all the time in the desert - heck, in any desert.

If I miss a few details, I apologize...

A couple of years ago, 3d ACR was at the NTC, and two mechanics were bringing back a Bradley from the Unit Maintenance Collection Point to their troop. They didn't use NVG's, and the driver drove off a 50' cliff into the bottom of a wadi.  Both were killed.

Hopefully no one died in this tank, but it still looks pretty bad.  It takes a lot of energy to dent rolled homogenous/Chobham armor.

For some reason, I got on the Army's mailing list for it's Airlift/Airdrop publication.  This particular publication was dedicated to cargo handling "mishaps."  One of the funniest photos was that of an air-dropped (I can't remember if it was LAPES or not) Sheridan light tank that broke it's cradle landed straight down on it's barrel.  It was actually suspended by the barrel sticking straight in the ground.  Anybody else seen this picture?

SJSAMPLE,

M551 Sheridan's used to "burn in at the speed of heat" all the time at Bragg.

Had a buddy in what was then 3-73 AR, the only airborne armor battalion in the Army.  He took a couple of funny pictures of Sheridans after the chutes (multiple) had collapsed, and the damn thing came screaming in.

One came close to a reviewing stand with a bunch of brass.  He had a photo (long since destroyed, I'm sure) of a bunch of "wet crotches" as they were inspecting the hulk (which was buried almost up to the turret ring).

I'll try to find a few and scan them in.  Too funny.
