SHELTON - The Elma police chief was arrested Wednesday after the car he was driving nearly struck a highway flagger, crashed into a utility pole and sent pedestrians scurrying to get out of its way, authorities said.
Gregory Adams was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence, Washington State Patrol Capt. G.R. Otto said.
Greg Adams was sworn in as Elma's chief of police in February.
The Mason County sheriff's office received a call at about 8:30 a.m. on what appeared to be an unmarked police car driving erratically here.
Undersheriff Gary Crane said the car drove through a construction zone, striking a traffic advisory sign and nearly hitting a highway flagger. The car then hit a utility pole in downtown Shelton before driving off again.
As the car made its way through downtown Shelton, pedestrians in crosswalks had to jump out of its way to avoid being hit, Crane said.
After following the car with lights flashing for about a mile, deputies were finally able to pull Adams over.
Otto said Adams was taken to a local hospital and consented to a blood draw. The patrol is investigating.
Adams was sworn in as Elma police chief last month. He previously was a patrol deputy for the Kitsap County sheriff's office
