I bought some q3131a lot sc81 at the gun show in Denver last November.  I just got around to opening the case today.  The brass is discolored on the neck and 1/4 of a inch down the case.  Is it safe to shoot this ammo in my bushmaster or my m-16

The discoloration is probably annealing. I have seen several brands like that. Annealing is a process that is applied to the case neck and shoulder area.

The ammo is probably fine to shoot.

Thats normal for mil spec ammo. The Q3131A is made by IMI for Winchester.

The_Beer_Slayer- I haven't heard of problems with the Q3131A. Have you experencied a lot of blown primers? I have heard of blown primers with Q3131.

Yes the Q3131a is great stuff.  I've been through a lot of it with my bushy M4 with no FTF's or ejection problems.  All the problems are def. with the older domestic Q3131 so you are good to go.

From what I understand, the discoloration is from being heat treated in that area of the case...

I've noticed this heat treating on many other NATO rounds...

I bought several cases of the Q3131 right after 9/11, and have gone through a little over 2000 rounds of it so far...
I've come to learn, this will be the only ammo I use from now on...

It's loaded fairly "HOT", and cycles very reliably in ALL my AR's...

I've had all kinds of different loads in my guns, and this is by far my favorite so far...

It's clean, consistent, and accurate..

Just my 2 cents...
