But for my apartment. I want to record the activities of the resident mice and cockroaches, so that I know when to sit in wait for them.

Just kidding. I want an inexpensive motion-activated video surveillance method that can be hidden and pointed at my door.

Any suggestions?

Night shots give off an obvious red flash. Deer do not care but a person could just steal the camera.I have a Bushnell from Sportsmans Wherehouse, but Cabelas sells the same camera. Decent pics.
