I work in a Hospital Imaging Center.
Today I had a female patient........a black lawyer.........that ought to tell you her political persuasion. I keep a TV on in my area..........FOX News usually.........I turn the sound off when I bring a patient into my area. "OH HELL NO!" she says when she see's FOX News..........and she rolls her eyes and cops an attitude. We finish her preparation and she has her tests but is required to wait in the lobby for about an hour for a different test. The lobby has 4 TV's tuned to different channels.......I have a remote control for them ALL!!! She sits in one area and begins to watch.........I immediately use the remote control to tune to FOX when she looks away briefly. She looks back to the TV and gives it the look. She moves to another TV in another area..........she begins to watch TV............Looks away briefly.............BAM! ......FOX News appears!! She moves again to another area and different TV...............................Yep, I did it again. She got "FOX'd" at all 4 TV's and finally walked outside.................she NEVER saw me change the channels. It's SO easy!!!! |

ETA: my wife is still laughing. |

......a black lawyer.........that ought to tell you her political persuasion. Well...honestly, it doesn't at all. It simply tells me her gender and ethnic background...nothing about her political persuasion. While it is true that a large majority of black people typically vote Democratic, just because someone is black doesn't mean they are automatically a liberal. The rest of the story was hilarious...I would have been tempted to do that myself had I been in your situation. |

I also recently saw a poll that said that 36% of blacks associated themselves with characteristics that are normally labeled "Conservative". So..........36% are "Conservative" minus 3% of Blacks that actually voted for someone else other than Obama = 33% of Blacks who voted for Obama because he's black? Voted for him on skin color alone? I believe that's racist. |

Then throw in woman and lawyer, and rolling eyes at Fox News, and it's confirmed. |

Something tells me that you use a laser pointer to move a red spot around the floor to tease cats for fun, don't you...

I believe that's racist. Lots of blacks are social conservatives. In fact, in CA gays lost on a gay marriage vote because so many blacks and hispanics came out to vote for Obama. Where blacks and hispanics trend left is mostly economic issues. They want socialism (even if they use other words). They also think Republicans are meanies and secretly racist. |

The rest of the story was hilarious...I would have been tempted to do that myself had I been in your situation. I would agree that being black does not automatically tell you her political beliefs, but the highlighted word can. My wife is in law school –– she's one of the most conservative people I know. Somehow being a lawyer means one is automatically liberal? I will point out that we are both white, but honestly that shouldn't matter. It isn't like blacks voted for O by what, 95% or so?
Then throw in woman and lawyer, and rolling eyes at Fox News, and it's confirmed. Her being black, female, or a lawyer doesn't automatically mean she is liberal. My eyebrows would have started going up when she was rolling her eyes at Fox News, however. Understand –– I'm just saying that people can't always make automatic assumptions about someone's political leanings just by their race, gender, or occupation. Say the patient had been a black male lawyer, or perhaps a black male professor? They could have been liberals....or perhaps Clarence Thomas, Walter Williams or maybe Thomas Sowell. YES, stereotypically and statistically, the odds were high that she would be a liberal...but it might not always be the best idea to make assumptions. Just food for thought. |
